Investment banking is certainly a high pressure job which will require the candidate to live out of the suitcase most of his life . There will be sacrifices on personal front , especially when you will spend the least amount of your day at home.

However proper scheduling, organization skills and time management skills can help you cope up with the pressure. Moreover, the salary and other benefits will definitely be a good motivation factor .

venture capital mbaVENTURE CAPITAL: Students who display good investment acumen and a keen understanding of business world can also consider the challenging career of venture capitalism.

Exam Advice: Methods Adopted by Students to Study

Introduction

With exams round the corner, I would like to present an article on the methods students use to study for their exams. Normally students have varying ways of studying for their exams.

Some can comprehend very well during classroom lectures and therefore they prefer studying in a group. Some students prefer studying well on their own without any disturbance.

Whichever method you choose you should see that it is proving to be beneficial for your studies. Studying in a group has an advantage that in case if you have a doubt in your studies, you can easily clear it out with your colleagues. This is not possible when studying alone.

Scheduling time for studies

When you are studying alone, there is a possibility that you may get bored and start delaying the studying of important lessons to a later date.

However, if you are studying in a group, you have someone breathing at your neck to stick to a schedule, which is predetermined.

Group studying also inculcates discipline and regularity in studying. It helps students plan and maintain a strict study schedule, which if abided by, will give them success in their exams.

Apart from this, doubts arising during studies can be sorted out immediately. In studying alone, you will not be able to enjoy the above-mentioned benefits.

Discover new ideas to study

Studying together in a group can help stimulate our grey cells and helps us to discover new concepts. Apart from this, we can also find new ways of solving a particular question.

Students can opt for any method convenient to them such that they can remember the answer during their exams. Group studying can also help us to find out what are our weak points and our strengths.

By solving doubts of other students, we can get confidence in a topic thus boosting our chances of clearing the exam. However, at the same time, it should be remembered that studying in a group should not disturb you from your path.

It should not distract you from your goal. This is only possible if you have colleagues who share the same study schedule, as yours. If this is not the case, your choosing to study in a group will not yield you good results.

Sharing notes

Students who write notes during class training can compare their notes and obtain the right guidance on what to study.

Exchanging notes will eliminate the possibility of errors occurring during studying.  For example, if you have not taken down notes on a particular topic, joining a study group will give you access to those notes.

Harsh Gupta, a class XII student from St. Joseph’s pre-university college in Bengaluru says that he has joined a chat group where he discusses the syllabus and solves his own and other students queries.

Some friends start solving math’s problem simultaneously and then discuss each step via chat. Even though the students are not present near each other, their virtual presence will enable them to solve their problems and doubts.

Previously this was not possible as the internet was not at large. However, with the internet becoming common everywhere, virtual study groups are not new .

Friendly assistance

AparnaGaitonde, teacher, IES Modern English School, Mumbai is of the view that group studying helps students iron out any deficiencies in knowledge in aparticular subject.

exam-notesStudents can solve each other’s problems in virtual sessions. Some students may be good at one subject while some others may be good at others.

When studying together, the weak students can learn from the intelligent ones and thus increase their chances of clearing the exams. Thus, studying in a group is always better as compared to studying in solitude.

However there may be students who study well when they are alone. These students can accumulate their doubts and get them solved when they meet their friends.

Boosting confidence

Students invariably face parental pressure to score well in their exams. This can take a toll on their confidence. If they study in a group, all their fears will evaporate as then they will know that their fears are unfounded, when they discuss with their friends and study mates.

Studying with their friends gives them the knowledge that the story is the same everywhere and that they are facing nothing out of the world. This will serve to improve their self-esteem and their confidence.

Thus there are tremendous benefits of group study or at least keeping in touch with your colleagues when you are studying.

revisePeer pressure

However, all said and done, if a particular student is not able to keep up with the pace of his study mates during a group study session, it will lead to him losing confidence.

In this case, it is clear that his intelligence is not the same as his other mates in his group. This leads him to experience peer pressure from his colleagues.

It may also affect his self-esteem. However, at such times, it is important that students do not lose their confidence and keep an open mind for any new experiences they may have.  Doing this will eradicate their self-doubt.

Going off track

Any group study session will only succeed if the team members all have the same goal of studying together and deriving the benefits of group studying. However, if any of them have other ideas, then the whole group will suffer because of one person.

Another possibility could be that the student may lose his place in the race. Then he may lose interest in studying as he has found that he cannot cope with the pace of the group. At times, he may also go off track never to return to studying.

This is the phenomenon of digressing from studies. Reasons for this could be pressure from peers to conform to the group pace of studying. However, when you find that you cannot keep up with them then at such times, it is always better to study alone and whenever you have doubts, you can contact one of your colleagues.

Conclusion

Thus, we have seen that group study is the best method to study for your exams; however, if you are an introvert or are a weak student, then it will be well for you to study alone and get in touch with your group only if you have any doubts.

Phonics: Relevance and Importance for Students

Learning is well-thought-out as an art in acquiring knowledge, wherein people would have different perspectives in learning things of world.

Known or unknown in some way or other we tempt to learn things; if interested then more curiosity to know methods of learning.

Generally, not many of us would be excellence in grasping information as quick as possible, especially for students it’s hard to follow.  Most of time tutors and parents senses tough to focus their students or children’s on study.

Because in usual method of study they grasp only information, instead knowledge is gained only when they understand the concepts of subjects.

Naturally students have better tendency to follow their mind with sound and pictures and that’s why everything we hear and see easily stored in our memory.

So then if you think, Is there any study method inform of sound-letter?Yes, of course Phonics method of learning makes students to clinch with words and sounds.

Typically many tutors would have probably heard of phonics, but the chances are quite less in knowing and explaining about phonics. That’s where we interested to bring you the basic information of phonics and its importance for students to lead a new study revolution.

phonics-app_thumb800What is phonics?

Phonics is a method of learning, which bilaterally coordinates words and sounds foreasiness and effective learning. The aim of phonics is to relate the sound and spelling in common words and there by linking to similar set of patterns.

While generating a word through phonics, the consideration must be on decoding for the reason that a vital element to link the previous sound with next word. In other words, learning phonics is attaining knowledge in a positive way in both reading and writing.

How to structure Phonics?

The phonics instruction has to be unambiguous rather than couched. The ordering of instruction relies on exposing unique clues on sound-spelling relation; surely one who understands this clearly, can be a good reader then.

Usually the poor readers finds difficult to follow at the beginning, so phonics has to be taught in easy manner. Especially children’s face quite difficulties in reading and so a good phonics should have a definite pattern for sound-spelling along with guided options to sound and to blend out new words.

The practice should start from a new word and followed by pronunciation with proper sound-spelling. This is a crucial part in phonics instruction to generate those words suitable for decoding, so consequently next word could be remembered easily.

PhonicsTherefore in phonics focus on sound-spelling relationship in minimal period. While planning phonics lessons,do plan accordingly to all type of students, even some may have higher level of proficiency than others.

How to practice phonics?

Phonics involves blending between sound and words, also written characters, but it mostly pinches on sound of spoken words. So while practicing phonics focus on sound-spelling relationships that related with print or text.

Most of phonemic attentiveness is oral tasks and so it is controversial in reading contents. In phonics several components are important for reading comprehension, phonemic awareness, vocabulary and fluency building.

The finest practices in phonics are listed that recommended for parents and educators for better teaching.

Modelling -Phonics

The modelling is a significant role in phonics that can be achieved only by self-practice. Most of the words would not be familiar to new readers, both students and teachers have to model sound-letter relationship to learn new words through decoding.

Some common text that could be easily modelled is non-fiction books, nursery rhymes, songs and poems with repetitive etymology. The exact period for learning phonics starts after three years from the child begins kindergarten.

Since the students are instructed from their kindergarten it continues in their studies and after quite experience deliberately they apply phonics in their readings.

There is no constraint in terms of age groups to learn phonics, but most influence constituents were the stage of development and instruction structures.

If a children receives instruction either one by one or as a whole that does not create any variations so phonics is something common.

Systematic teaching

In phonics the teaching should be preceded in systematic way and that actually means taking the children through a contiguous plan rather than general aspect of phonics. The systematic teaching can concentrates on the following,

  • Analogy phonics – New parts of words are discovered using familiar words
  • Synthetic phonics – Method of decoding the words by translating in form of sound and then blending it
  • Context phonics – Sound-letter links to generate context clues to decode new words.
  • Spelling phonics- The sound-letters combinations used to write words.
  • Analytic phonics – Parsing out of spelling-sound relationship from a word, once it is identified as whole word.

Neverthelessin systematic teaching, instructions imply a sequential focusesto help the readers to decode new words using the relationship between sounds and letter symbols.

For example:  If a child identifies a sound-letter in /a/ as a piece of literature and instantly this skill uses to get alliteration of the /a/ sound (beginning sound in repetition) and even phonics games are available, for sample if you write a word “cat” then the sounds should be produced in order of “c” ”a” and “t” so listening skill is much important in phonics.

Why student learn it?

The phonics tends to relay on particularly words and sounds which resembles common strategy in memorizing and pronunciations.

The readers have their own way of reading approaches by using pictures, context or excluding some parts. To become fluent in reading students are expected to follow repertoire of words.

Understanding of phonics draws attention in studies and research studies reveals that, students improve well in comprehend sections and helps them to map out sounds on top of spellings. Other than many benefits were griped in why phonics to students as below,

  • Phonics ensuing students with verbal exercises to erase reading difficulties.
  • Since it laid emphasis on spelling patterns in addition improves spelling abilities.
  • The blending of words and sounds indicates to identify word skill relations.

In addition phonics develops the eloquence in reading comprehension because students can easily correlate in word identification and because they identify decoding stands as a major trouble earlier.

If students do well in phonics and word recognition, then speaking and writing vocabularies is piece of cake. The reason behind this insistence is later it found that students who know phonics are beyond in using new words than those who don’t follow the same.

Also studies have proven that half of the English words can be put into phonics which related one with another.

For long time phonics was considered to be isolated learning and some researchers discovered that children’s perform well in decoding than young students.

Therefore phonics, is recommended for future study to improve vocabulary and language proficiency.

Tutor Revenue Sharing Structure at MyTrustedTutor.com

Money matters- in fact it is the matter which plays the hardball in most situations. MyTrustedTutor.com recognizes the importance and we base our fiscal structure on this basis itself.

Pricing Structure

We don’t charge anything in advance as of now. However, we do operate on an impactful revenue sharing arrangement. It is a free world and we abide by the same rules.

We want you to accept the structure as per your own will and understanding. In case of doubts or clarifications, it is pertinent to clear them and we strive to do that on an immediate basis.

downloadFull believers of clean hands doctrine, we are here to help you out and we expect the same level of honour and commitment from your end.

There have been regrettable incidents of past wherein tutors have failed to adhere to basic code of conduct. In return we have opted to not let that deter us or make us negative: it is easier to ignore a wrong doing than hold a grudge forever.

We will do our best to make the best out of our arrangements and commitments and we would appreciate the same from you. It is a long term relationship after all, one which cannot thrive in negativity and doubt.

Why sharing Feedback is important

It is a trend we have observed: tutors who shared feedback with us meticulously got more assignments and fetched higher levels of tuition conversion.

feedbackFeedbacks are important in business conversations as we can gauge our performance that way. They provide an effective finishing effect.

Some tutors share feedbacks on their personal initiative and we sincerely appreciate their efforts. Needless to say, we share more enquiries with them, too.

It is a part of mutual rewarding process because you make our process fast and efficient. Such efforts also showcase your seriousness and commitment.

We understand that as dedicated professionals, your schedules are busy and such activities (of sharing feedbacks and a couple of other administrative compliances) slip from your head.

This is why we make sure that reminders are sent to you, because we believe in benefits of doubt. Maybe you are confused about the kind of feedback to share. Any feedback is good feedback- sharing is caring, after all.

Let us take an example of a case which is not suiting your skills or timings or efforts. Maybe they are fit for some other teachers who would really appreciate such feedback and work on them.

To err is to human- we try to be as correct as possible in our business requirements but we are open to genuine errors and fallacies, too. This is where your feedback helps us, and ultimately yourself.

What to talk about during first meeting and Demo?

A common question which plagues newbies and beginners is: “I am new to private tuition and don’t know how much to charge?”

To answer that, first ask yourself:

What is your ability and strength?

Does your talent validate you charging high fees?

firstdeserveOf course, no one is stopping you from doing the latter. You are free to do whatever but remember! If you do not deliver it is going to backfire against you. There are no hard and fast rules for setting your limits but your fee should definitely cover the following aspects:

  • Your transport costs
  • Your marketing costs
  • Rewarding your talents and skills
  • Your personal efforts

Since these variables are different for different individuals, the fees are different, too. One thing to remember here is that we have observed that when you charge anything less than Rs. 250/- per session (with 1 session spanning 60 to 90 minutes), your motivation will dissipate sooner or later.

Because we are all humans at the end of the day, ruled by same psychological rules and parameters. You might feel that your skills are not being rewarded correctly and hence, you may give lesser efforts and ultimately give up on the assignment in to-to.

Of course, it follows that we will not let this slide by easily- this is a serious act of non compliance and breach of our code of conduct and we will be forced to put you in a black list.

That translates into us not sending you many articles, sometimes none at all! We really do not want to do that and we definitely believe that you don’t either. Hence, do not do something which affects you negatively in long term.

So we have come to the end of this descriptive guide. We really hope it will help us both grow and prosper and simultaneously mutually benefit from each other.

Come, join us and be a part of an innovative revolution in the domain of teaching.

Importance of Teachers: The Pillar of a Classroom

We need to discuss the importance of teachers, the guardian of a functional classroom!

A teacher is the backbone of a classroom. Just like a strong backbone becomes a pillar of the human body, the teacher is the pillar of his/her classroom. Being a teacher is no more a derogatory profession.

Individuals who believe in giving their best in imparting not only a strong academic base but even life skills and values generally sustain in the system.

So how do we differentiate between a good teacher and a developing teacher? What skills, values and mindsets will lead to one to become a good teacher- that is something we need to assess now.

There is no one who is bad, incorrect or wrong – it’s the absence of the guidance and skills coupled with the ignorance of context which determines attitude.

Every teacher tries to pave his/her way to develop and his/her skills. A good teacher is one who not only possesses the appropriate values, mindsets and skills but puts them into practice at appropriate junctures.

Empathy is one of the qualities that enable a teacher to understand how the child is feeling at a particular time. This is different from sympathy where one would feel sorry.

By being in the shoes of someone we begin to understand them, which makes us empathise and act differently with that person.

If the child does not feel understood and loved, s/he may consider school as futile. This will have a tremendous impact on their overall development.

A teacher also needs to be an excellent communicator! Children spend most of their time in school, that’s also when their learning ability is at its peak.

It is thus vital that anything imparted needs to be communicated in the best possible manner. This also includes child-friendly ways of imparting knowledge. It doesn’t matter what is communicated, what really matters is how it is done!

This means, if the pedagogy and learning styles are not taken care of, no matter how much effort the teacher has taken it will not seep into the minds of the students.

Thus, the innovation and creativity needs to flourish in the classroom making each child think, wonder, ponder and eager to listen.

If the communication loop is not strong enough, there are high possibilities that the child may withdraw from the teacher.

By possessing this quality the teacher must also know to balance the same by being a great listener. Students have a lot to share, and it is essential that we let those great ideas take shape.

Afterall, it is only through dialogue and sharing of ideas that great transformations take place. It is extremely important that teachers balance their speaking and listening time.

The key to any event / outcome to be successful is planning! Planning an event or marriage well, leads to a great show! Similarly, lessons / activities / questions and assessments planned in advance leads to great student outcomes.

This means keeping the needs to each child in mind while working on the lesson plan. It also enables one to think of the different questions / misconceptions that may arise and possible ways to respond to them.

It gives the teacher a benchmark to see if what s/he taught seeped into the child’s memory? If yes, what is it that worked? If no, what is it that s/he can do differently next time? The assessments are a great way of knowing this.

It is rightly said, if you believe in something, there is nothing that can stop you from achieving it. The same rule applies to teachers and their conviction for their students.

The belief that all my students can and all my students will – is faith with which they must operate. By looking at scores, performance of varied activities, etc. it is very likely to jump to conclusions about each child and label  him/her.

However, the trick here is to continue to believe that each child is unique, different and carries a spark within him/her that lights in just the most luminous way!

No matter how much e-learning and technology has captured the world, no matter how much digitization of content is done every single day, no matter how economical e-learning is getting – nothing can replace the presence of a teacher in the classroom.

S/he is that one go to person with whom the child has a touch and feel connect, with whom the child can relate to, and have a relationship with. Computers, tablets and laptops are mere machines.

They cannot and never will replace what a human can do for another! Thus, in this age it is extremely vital to possess and developing the qualities to be a better teacher than you were today!

Because knowledge is available in abundance everywhere, what’s lacking is the means to impart it in the most efficient manner!

Best 10 Traits of a Good Teacher: A Patient and Wonderful Mentor

Who is a good teacher?

There are many qualities and attributes associated to the role and personality of a good teacher.

This is not a strict term and encompasses several factors in itself because the awesomeness of a teacher is not restricted entirely to a certain few caps.

quality-of-a-good-teacher-essay-helpFirst, he / she should always be willing to learn and evolve as per different expectations and times.

Learning NEVER stops, even if you are a teacher. One should not get irritated if their mistakes are pointed out or if a student asks a question out of genuine curiosity which they do not know the answer to.

Second, he / she should strive to always5385384_f248 be a good teacher and mentor to their students. Do not be ignorant or think that you are always correct. You are in a position of responsibility. Be the best! :)

Third, he / she should have reasonably good communication skills. It is very important to make sure that your pupil is completely understanding what you want to convey to them.

Fourth, he / she should be knowledgeable. That really does not translate into being a know it all. What we mean is that you should have adequate knowledge to guide their students to achieve the best possible results.

good-teacher-blog-imageFifth, he / she should use humour in all the right manners. No one likes a grumpy cat, right? This is equally applicable to teachers, too. Learning should be fun, not a drab and boring activity which deters your student from learning at all.

Sixth, he / she should have a positive attitude! It is really important because all your pupils might not be on the same page. Some might be fast and some might be slow learners. You should take into account such a bunch and hence, have a patient and positive attitude.

670px-Be-a-Good-Teacher-Step-4Seventh, he / she should be flexible. Being rigid helps NOONE, not even the most awesome of teachers. It is great to have rules and regulations but life is not lived according to only a few conditions. A lot may happen and you should be open to these changes!

Eighth, he / she should use diverse and interesting methods of teaching. No one likes a teacher who comes and speaks a few things and goes away. A teacher should be friendly and approachable and should use interesting ways to make sure that the end message is received by his students.

bTyE9exjcNinth, he / she should make the students figure out things and instances on their own. Do not serve everything on a silver platter- ease does not equal learning. Make stuff challenging and interesting, this is very important an aspect of being an effective and efficient teacher.

Tenth (LASTLY, PHEW!) he / she should promote independence in their pupils when it comes to learning and absorbing new things. The idea is to make sure that your students learn in the best manner and understand and apply the theories in practical life.

LinkedIn and Students: Making the Maximum Impact

I hope this helps you try and understand how LinkedIn works. I have had a great experience. The hard work paid off when I got two writing stints and an internship offer through LinkedIn itself.

Ping!

That was the noise my faithful Nokia N8 made when I received an email. You know that feeling when you get a new web message? I can never get over it, it’s pretty awesome!

Even if it’s a really stupid web advertisement sent as part of obligatory duties of something you naively signed up, it’s interesting to take a note of it nonetheless.

Anyhow, so I checked the new mail which was basically an invitation from an acquaintance. An invitation to what, you might ask?

Nay, it was not a more technically advanced method for Hogwarts to reach me and not an extended invitation to a magical guild, either! It was but a message to join a business network called “LinkedIn”.

I would have almost not taken cognizance of the same had it not been filled with interesting quotes and pictures from the classy professionals.

Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, heck, even my favourite chef had his own business profile. I was totally enamoured and mesmerized by the whole outlay and simply had to catch on with this trend!

Voila! That day saw me making a shabby profile on LinkedIn and, as is a very interesting habit of mine, conveniently forgetting that it even exists.

This went on for a few months before I was reminded of its existence by the faithful mails sent by the website. I decided to spend a couple of hours and dedicated that amount of time in updating and shaping my profile- almost into an online CV of sorts.

What changed, you ask? Why was I suddenly putting so much effort into this website? I don’t have noble reasons as I was simply catching up to the fad.

Recruiters, I was told by seniors, really search you up on Holy Grail Google and LinkedIn is a top result website and hence, I needed to put my best foot forward.

After doing some preliminary research on how exactly LinkedIn scopes out in the bigger picture, I was intrigued by the stories and by the way the website functioned.

Obviously, I had to perfect my profile. And I did exactly that, not saying that my profile is anywhere near perfect, but hey! Kudos to the effort, right?

This is not a walk through to make a great and outstanding LinkedIn profile as there is no set formula to make one, anyway. You have to personalise your descriptions and you have to learn with time.

The Picture

law students guide to using linkedinSo well, when you open the profile page, you see a square box in left-middle position on the screen.

This is where a picture of you needs to be placed. By a photograph, I do not mean a duck-face shot or an extravagant selfie.

I also don’t urge you to get suited up and hire the best photographer in town to get a classic shot. No, that is not my intention.

The aim here is to procure a picture which is simple, yet professional and nothing which makes the recruiter think, “Um, am I sure if I want to hire THAT?

Next, you will obviously put your full name in the required boxes followed by a sub-line. Now, that sub-line can be the name of your current college or it can be a recent place you worked at. Either works in this case.

Here is the time when you also mark your current location and define your education. Mention your college and your schools and make sure it reflects in the sub-heading as the final outcome beside your picture.

Next up, is the summary.

Think of it as a more mature version of an “About me” from Facebook. Here, I urge you to not EVER famous quotes. People want something original from you and it wouldn’t do you any good to pick others brains.

Here is a little hack: Modify the objective from your CV to the effect of making it wordier and a little more simplistic. Introduce your academic achievements, your extra-curricular achievements and your co-curricular achievements.

Talk about your internships, your positions of responsibility.

However, you need to get all of this done in maximum 10 lines in order to make sure that a person is STILL interested in scrolling down and reading the details for each of these things.

Now, the Experience tab.

iStock_000040905870Large-1940x1292This is pretty easy, actually. This space should enumerate ALL your internships with the specific dates and months marked out.

Please do not be lazy while providing details of the work done by you in all the individual stints: it counts in the long term.

This is also the space where you throw more light on your positions of responsibility and making it sound fancy: not an impossible task, you can take it from me.

Next up is the Test Scores bracket.

Yes, seriously, we need to put those marks out in the open. Okay, we can leave out the horrible ones [For instance, my Grade 12th marks can probably break the deal].

Create separate columns and tabs for all individual semesters with the particular GPAs reflecting in such columns. Here, you can put test scores for all the other, random things like your TOEFL, Diploma grades, certificate courses etc.

The next section is that of Publications.

This is probably the most important section, as is the case with your CV. Mention all the publications, even the ones you don’t list in your resume!

Mention the Article title, copy paste and shorten the abstract, list the journal and voila! It would all look extremely neat.

The Projects section is something I see people hardly utilise. It’s important!

LinkedIn-StrategyYou can mention your grad school projects, your internship projects and your school projects in this box. You could also put all the initiatives made by your respective clubs and affiliations at grad school, or post grad college.

Next up is the Organisations column

This should ideally depict you mentioning, in detail, all the positional responsibilities. Remember those from the Summary column? Yeah, those!

Be it Drama Club, Student Council, Book Club, Rotary Club, Debating Society or anything- Mention them with a few lines about the work you do there!

The Certifications column

is a “sort of there but not really there column”.

However, still make use of it by mentioning your diplomas, CS level clearances, language classes etc. There will be a series of overlaps but the key here is to not get bored. Haha! :D

Towards the end is the “Volunteer Causes”.

Here, you can mention the NGO you interned at, or the fest you volunteered for which might against overlap with the Positions of Responsibility column above.

The causes you care about column should be ideally brainstormed by you as I really can’t point out what you like. Make it a broad base in the beginning and narrow it down as you go further.

Next is the Honors and Awards column.

This is where you blabber and blabber some more about your mooting achievements, your debating triumphs and practically anything where you have attained a position even if it is the most funny sounding local competition to make the best advertisement. List it ALL down, here.

Ideally, it should cover the last 5 years worth of achievements. Were you one of those Olympiad champs? List it the hell down, mate.

The Course column

should see you listing down your university with a mention of all the major subjects you have studied till date. The same goes for your Grade 12 and 10 (if you decided to include them, which I would suggest, you should!)

The Skills tab

This column should have all the important skills and talents you have undertaken at grad school. Broad headings may include research, drafting, public speaking,  debating, specific areas of your specialisation, blogging etc.

You should try and get people to endorse you for more and more skills as it reflects well in the final profile: however, that doesn’t mean that any random Tom, Dick and Harry have any value with respect to such endorsements.

The Education tab should be a more extensive version of the Course column where you mention your standing in the batch along with the set of activities undertaken by you followed by the batch year.

The Additional Info is the informal section where you mention your other interests like, maybe, singing, dancing, trekking etc. You also list the method for people to contact you apart from LinkedIn itself.

The Recommendations column is also heavily underused but that’s because it’s extremely difficult to get someone to try and write good things about you.

Get testimonials from your employers, friendly associates and professors (if at all they are tech-savvy, that is!). These help a lot and maybe, one day you can follow through by doing the same for some other starry eyed kid in the industry?

Well, that’s it for now. I hope this helps you try and understand how LinkedIn works. I have had a great experience. The hard work paid off when I got two writing stints and an internship offer through LinkedIn itself.

It’s not all in vain and if you do the basic groundwork, updating it is not a Herculean task. You can synchronise it with the random updates made by you in your resume.

So go on, do this today. Take out a little time and utilise it by focusing that energy on LinkedIn. May the force be with you! :)

You can view my LinkedIn profile HERE to get a minimal idea. Full disclosure: this is not a marketing attempt! :D

Career in Journalism: Guide to Travel Writing

My posts majorly talk about different avenues for a career in journalism. If you are a traveller, and have the ability to put sentences together of experiences, you can try your hand at travel writing. A travel journalist is a writer who is travelling as a journalist/writer, not as a tourist or holiday maker.

journalismIt isn’t easy to write interesting narratives when you are in holiday mode. You can either be a full-time travel writer or a freelance writer. You’ll need to know how to write a travel article, and discover angles that is unusual. MyTrsutedTutor.com provides you the kinds of travel writing that you could explore:

Points to be noted:

  • Travel guides are not regarded as travel journalism.
  • Travel journalism is writing that engages the reader and is often historically, politically, culturally and geographically informed without becoming too academic.
  • Travel writers have an eye for the idiosyncratic

Types of Travel Writing:

Destination Specific: Maybe a city/resort/hotel. These are often thinly disguised promotional pieces and rarely go beyond the surface. A few writers do manage to write about a very specific place and give the place a certain character and personality.

The Travel Guide: This is a big market, and often is a book published independently. Occasionally a travel guide-style piece does appear in magazines. Their primary focus is to provide information – list structures are very common.

The Journey: Many travel writersdsc_00021 focus on the journey – on movement from one place to another. The narrative may involve places and encounters along the way, but the emphasis is more on getting there than on being there.

Thematic: Many travel stories are thematic. For example – you may focus on visitingforts of Medieval India. Good thematic writing moves through different locations but maintains a tight focus.

Personal Narrative: First person account that needs to have a particular focus and interesting theme. No one is interested in the writer unless something truly interesting happens to them.

Feature Writing: A travel feature combines elements of both features and travel writing. There is research, context, analysis as well as descriptions of place, characters and atmosphere.

Talking_Travel_Writing_Travel_notebook_illustrationWhat should a good travel piece cover?

  • A sense of hardship or challenge
  • Seeing the world and feeling the world
  • Seeing things in a different light, a crooked angle
  • Shows us a part of ourselves – both self and anonymity
  • To rethink and question judgments
  • Keep our minds mobile, awake, alert

CA Preparation: Preparing for CA Exams Optimally Part 2

CA Preparation

Part I can be accessed HERE.
  1. Be regular and sincere in your studies – It’s really essential to be always regular in your studies and try to be in touch with the books always. I have been through such instances in my preparations where even a few days gap from studies has been fatal and has always broken the flow of preparations and I had to face many difficulties. So, always try to minimise breaks and distractions as much as possible to maintain the preparations on a regular basis.
  2. Mock tests and past papers – To acclaim the taste of victory of the real battle, one should put himself to test through dummy like battle scenario. The mock tests and past papers do exactly that.accountancy

It becomes very easy on our part to solve q’s when we take one q’s at a time but the same would create a problem when we are put to solve numerous q’s in a 100 marks paper in exam and we are unable to solve it to our best in time though we know the answers to it.

As it’s said, “Practice makes a man perfect”, the same statement would be perfectly justified if we sit for mock tests and practice the past papers. Here’s a look at what I did in my case:-

It was SEP 2014 and the NOV 2014 IPCC exam was approaching. Although I had made a preparation beyond my capabilities in the best possible manner, I was still lack of confidence as I had never been put to test in real like exam scenario beforeas the NOV attempt was my first.

It’s when ICAI declared mock tests were about to be conducted soon and so I thought this would probably help me to optimise my performance and help me regain confidence for the exams. Surprisingly we were only a handful of students who had registered for the exams among a crowd of many who had to appear for the exams.

chartered-accountants-cv-samples1I sat for the mocks and found out that I had scored merely 41,33,40,41 respectively in the four papers of the first group. I started to doubt on myself and q’s hovered in my mind whether I would clear the exams or not. I stepped up my efforts and studied really hard without any break to get through.

I HAD MADE A PROMISE TO MYSELF EARLIER THAT I WILL NOT SIT FOR ANOTHER SIX MONTHS AT ANY COST TO CLEAR THE 1ST GROUP OF IPCC AND WILL GIVE EVERYTHING TO THE PREPARATION IN THE FIRST INSTANCE ITSELF.

That thought process worked in my favour and I even gave 3-4 past papers of all subjects just a week prior to the exams. The process was simple, I locked myself in a room, set the timer for 3 hours and started to write the past papers when the timer started backward counting. It helped me in several ways as mentioned below:-

  1. It improved my writing speed as I had to race against time to complete the paper in time.
  2. It helped me to make a strategy of how to attempt the q’s,i.e. which q’s to attempt in priority over others.
  3. It helped me immensely to remain calm during exams and utilise the 3 hours to the best possible extent.
  4. Most importantly it helped me to regain my confidenceback.

NOTE: Try to give the mocks and past papers during the end period of your preparations during the last 2 weeks prior to the exams as you will be completely prepared for the exams and can benefit immensely from it.

Also do make sure to self-evaluate the papers yourself and give marks to yourself being the checker and try to find out the range where you score to assess your performance. Also you can register yourself at various websites which provide you q’s papers and also send your scores and help you to assess your performance.

  1. Avoid wasting time in unnecessary activities- Try to reduce the no. of hours spent on various unnecessary activities which reduces your day’s effectiveness and this includes a range of activities such as using FB, chatting on Whatsapp or other kind of distractions.I am not against any use of such media, rather they are essential in today’s digital age. But, these will be effective only when we use it for the purpose for which I am writing this piece and rather wasting time in such websites doesn’t help in any way. Remember you will have enough time once the exams are over.

NOTE:Use various professional websites and try to participate in various forum discussions and be a part of it. It definitely helps you very much to improve your concepts learnt and also makes you a better individual. It helps to scale up your learning experience and clarify many things.

  1. Try to find some very powerful inspirational statements or quotes and write it down in all the books or copies which you are using in your preparations. It works wonders and stimulates a positive energy in your body to work for your goals.

Change your name with the addition of prefix of CA in it. You will definitely be motivated to work for your goals and would never think of deviating from your objectives. Try to have a look at it atleast once in a day, you can feel the difference in yourself.

Visualize being a chartered accountant and the dreams you always have aspired for yourself from the profession, before you sleep. Try to write down in a diary about the activities done by you throughout the day which took you a step closer to your goal, before you sleep.

Try to talk to your peers, discuss the problems with them where you don’t understand something, take the help of seniors, teachers or anyone else with whom you feel comfortable. Never ever let a doubt remain as a doubt and try your best to find answers to it.

In the end find a reason to associate yourself to of why are you working so hard to be a part of this profession. Be sincere in your approach and you will always find several reasons to cherish about your sincerity. Take the guidance from those who already have made it and learn from it to compare your strategies with theirs, never hesitate to communicate in such regard.

I would like to conclude this by saying a statement once said by my teacher and role model, “DIL ME HAMESHA CA BANNE KI AAG JALAYE RAKHNA, JAB TAK YE AAG JALTI RAHEGI TABTAK TUM USI AUR APNI KOSHISH JARI RAKHOGE”(Keep the desires of becoming of CA in your heart alive always, as long as you are passionate about it you will always be inclined to work on it).

Having said all of the above, I do have many more things to say, but I guess these are sufficient for the cause for which I am writing this piece. I would definitely like to get your feedbacks, comments and suggestions for improving this article further to help each other associate ourselves for the common cause.

I hope I have been of any service to you and could help you in anyway through this piece. Visit this link for my other articles,

CA Preparation: Preparing for CA Exams Optimally [Part I]

CA Preparation

“Chartered Accountancy”, the first thought that comes to the mind is,it is very tough to clear the exams and this becomes evident by a look at the previous pass percentage results and what we get to hear from the people surrounding us. So, it is wise not to pursue for such a qualification as the odds of success are marginal.

The same was the case with me as well, but I took the decision to be a part of the elite profession and so set afoot in the journey of becoming a professional in life, despite knowing the chances of getting through and when many were not in favour of my decision, mainly because I had a Science background in my intermediate and the course itself being so tough.

It has been a good progress so far and I have managed to sail through the exams each time with flying colours. But, all of this has had come with a cost attached to it and sacrifices made in the past, that, I know would never return in my life ever.

So, I thought of writing this piece to share my story of“How I managed to clear the CA exams”, i.e. CPT and IPCC with decent marks and what did I implement in my approach for the same.

How to have a proper preparation for CA Exams?

This q’s has been one of the frequently asked q’s, which every CA student must have tried looking for as was the case with me as well. But, after having cleared 2 levels of the CA exams,IfeelI do have a few things to share with you which can help you to find some answers to it :-

  1. Coverage of the whole syllabus of each paper– It is really vital and essential to take care that the whole of the syllabus of any paper of any level of CA exam must be covered to make sure that nothing remains untouched prior to the exam and to increase the chances of improving the score in the exams. Many of us have a habit to cover up only those topics which have more weightage from examination point ca-2of view, but this can be very dangerous sometimes when the exam pattern differs from regular pattern. So, do make sure that the whole syllabus is in your grasp.

NOTE:Having said this, if one is unable to complete the whole syllabus in time, then do make sure that you have a strong base in 20% of the syllabus which can fetch you 80% marks. But, this is an extreme measure when the time is limited and the coverage needed is way more than that.

  1. Proper planning for preparation – This is a really crucial step for an optimum preparation taking any exam in consideration. You need to be very clear in your approach about when you should complete your first level of preparation, and then go for revisions depending on your requirements. Let me explain this taking my example:

When I was preparing for IPCC exams I found out that though I had put a lot of efforts for the exam ,but I was short of confidence as I didn’t have a well laid out plan beforehand to face the exam.

It was because of the very reason stated above. It was due to this I had to drop my MAY 2014 attempt and had to skip to the next attempt. Then I changed my approach and just did one simple thing:-

I took a diary and started noting down all the important q’s of each and every chapter that I had been through from any paper, the first time. Those were such q’s which needed to be revised for sure due to the complexities involved in solving such q’s or because I couldn’t solve it the first time on my own.

The q’s were accompanied by page nos. and also the source of the material from where I had encountered such a q’s. This was completely a time taking activity and needed a lot of effort as well to put it properly. But, believe me guys, it will help you channelize your efforts in a proper direction and will help you track your progress everyday.

I had also set targets for each day, which in turn turned into weekly targets, that gave shape to monthly targets and ultimately helped me save me enough time for revision as well. The best part of doing this is, it keeps you always in check and the day when you don’t meet your targets makes you regret about it and makes you to work harder the next day to achieve the targets.

It motivates you when you achieve the targets for the day and helps you improving your performance. The first revision can cover up those q’s mentioned in the first round rather than going through all the q’s once again and so on in the second revision as well which covers the q’s picked from the first revision.

NOTE:Everything discussed above must be in writing and shouldn’t be thought over and implemented.

  1. Set the benchmarks and standards for your preparations- I have often heard people asking a common q’s, “How many hours did you put to clear the exams”.Well, in my view this q’s makes more sense when it’s modified into “How many effective hours did you really put to clear the exams”.

What I mean to say is that, you need to set benchmarks for yourself when you study for the exams. Suppose, you are able to solve 3 q’s within 40 mins of time and you feel its an optimum effort and can’t exceed beyond that.

Then you will never ever achieve better results ahead and will remain stagnant in your approach. You must make up your mind and try to beat the previous effort and thus set a new benchmark for yourself. This is really vital to ensure you are improving and thus gain necessary skills to beat your previous performance.

NOTE: Develop your own set of approach for the exams andcompare your ownperformance with your previous one. Please don’t compare it with your peers as it is you who knows best of your own capabilities and thus can work on improving it.

  1. Don’t ignore the ICAI Study materials-Be sure to go through the ICAI study materials thoroughly atleast twice before you appear for the exams. This is extremely important as I have seen many tend to avoid ICAI study materials because they find it of no value as compared to other reference books and publications available in the market.I am not against any other authors as I myself have referred to other books and relied more on it at times for conceptual clarity. So, I do have a neutral view in such regard.

But, I have never ignored covering practice manualq’s, RTP’S, mock tests, past papers. It makes sense that ICAI would definitely like the students to present their answers the way ICAI has always recommended to present through various publications like suggested answers, RTP’S or practice manual. The practice manual and RTP q’s are of utmost importance from the exam point of view and needs to be practised several times for scoring better marks.

NOTE:Having said as above, it is upto the person’s choice of whether to go for ICAI materials or any other material in which they are comfortable with. Other reference books do present a good presentation style for the answers and are also easy to understand.

  1. Group Discussions – Group discussions help a lot in improving various skills such as interpersonal skills, communication skills, leadership skills etc.I know these things are irrelevant from examination point of view, but they do help you a long way in grooming your personality as well. It helps to mitigate your shortcomings in any subject where you face difficulty and also helps you to build a strong concept in the subject which you are comfortable with. So, it is always a WIN-WIN situation provided its properly implemented.

I remember when I had stepped into CA, and had my CPT exams approaching I found out that I was poor in accounts paper which is a core subject for CA. Being from a science background in my intermediate, I had absolutely zero knowledge in that paper, but I was quite strong in the QT section and was really confident in that.

So, I discussed about this problem with my friends and we unanimously decided to conduct GD’s regularly during every weekend where we discussed various topics from each paper and thus, in the process we helped each other to learn and grow. We all used to set the topic for discussion beforehand and everybody used to stick to it and discuss about the topics in the GD’s.

The best thing was I found out that I was improving in the accounts section and also my friends who were poor in QT were doing pretty well by that time. This boosted our confidence very much and we all were happy to have such sessions. But, we couldn’t conduct any GD’s during IPCC as we were always short of time to study, due to intense workload of studies. Visit this link for my experience at the Orientation Programme and role of GD’s in it.

NOTE: It is really important that GD’s must be restricted only on discussion about studies. Gossips must not be a part of it, otherwise it would simply turn out to be waste of time .Initially you may feel that the other people in the group are not reciprocating properly and are not sincere in their approach, but slowly they will realise the effectiveness of such GD’s and will also try to add value and be a productive part of the group.

Challenges of Self Teaching and Self Learning

Let us discuss some legitimate and common challenges of self teaching and self learning!

Lack of feedback is the main problem in self-teaching and self-learning. Specially it’s a lack of quick answer to small problem which leads to a buildup of a holes in knowledge.

transitionScenario: – If Arjun come upon a single sentence that doesn’t really make sense he doesn’t have someone whom he just quickly asked or email.

So either ( A ) he try to  figure it out before moving on, which could mean going off on a tangent, or ( B )he write this problem down to note the gap in his understanding , hoping to figure out later.

Self learner suffer from a  lack of organizations, lack of focus, and lack of curated, organized and current skill-level  appropriate learning resources.

If the absolute best thing for you to learn next was always at your fingertips, selected and ready to go, you’d accomplish significantly more towards your self-learning goals.

Problems that Arjun have to face according to the above scenario:

A ) If he tried to figure it out
  • The process of figuring it out could take minute or hours. Since he’s new to this material, he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know so his estimation could be poor.
  • Often the question are so minute , so specific to an exact example in a book or article that it seems silly to bug someone for help about it, even if this question might signal a great misunderstanding.
  • He spend time to trying to figure out what the Google search should be then more time shifting through the results looking for something reputable that answer his question .
  • After this ,he still might not find the answer, or not on that he understand or he might go down an infinity hole of learning more and more about a new topic , and not recognize when he’s understood enough so that he’s ready to backtrack to the original question.
B ) If he write it down and move on
  • It’s harder to get motivated to go back to the old question and look for the solution.
  • Then, he forget he don’t understand something until a later situation reveals his lack of understanding.

670px-Be-Self-Learning-Step-6One thing to note is that self –teaching happens on some level whenever you’re learning anything whether alone or with class or with a teacher. At some point you’ll be by yourself and have a question.

But having a mentor saves your time. Knowing that you have someone to at least brainstorm a solution with is psychologically, reassuring, and allow you to be perhaps more daring in your studies.

Most of all , good mentors provide those quick answers to small problems and prevent your knowledge gaps from growing
