Impact of E-Learning on Students:

When Education is concerned, many people often confuse it with schooling.

Education can be defined as a wise and respectable cultivation of gaining knowledge and learning to be shared with all.

The query that arises here is that when it comes to helping students to learn, the way many schools and lecturers operate is not exactly what call education.

Trying to drill knowledge into the student’s mind based on well-known plans framed by others is not education.

Education is all about advancements in technology with time and being updated according to the requirement along with implementing on social etiquette and demands of the present scenario.

A student would refuse to carry dozens of books on his back due to its unnecessary pain, which can be resolved by learning at school and studying the books at home.

The Art of Learning and Other Tutor Advice

How to keep a student focused?

Keeping students engaged is one of the number one tasks a teacher has to perform on a daily basis. Engaged students stay focused, perform better and get higher grades.

So how do we keep students engaged and focused throughout the school day, even when in subjects they don’t excel at?

downloadWhile it is the student’s responsibility to be good pupils, teachers can do their part by taking a few extra steps to make lessons more interesting and the classroom experience more productive overall.

Here are a few of our favourite suggestions for capturing student attention and helping them focus in the classroom:

Be Spontaneous

The unexpected always draws attention, and a teacher doing spontaneous things – actions that show their humanity – is an important way to contact with students. It helps them understand the teacher better as a person, not just a role model or authority figure, and promotes a closer connection between them.

This also helps to engage the student in ways that gets them more interested in what the teacher is saying.

tutor-adviceChange the scenery

From field trips to simply teaching class outside, moving students into a new environment can be a critical way to increase focus and engagement. Even changing up classroom  décor once a week can keep them on their toes.

Create a “self-running “ classroom

According to hot chalk , a “self-running” classroom ensures that students keep themselves and each other engaged , allowing the teacher more time to teach , rather than “administrate”.

When teacher establish expectation through routine , engaging activities and procedures , students will know what they need to do and when , leaving  little time to become distracted.

tutor-adviceImplement time management

Teaching students better time management skills and having them put them to use will be beneficial for them as well, ensuring they learn the importance of getting their work done as efficiently as possible.

Make lessons interactive

One of the best ways to help students focus is to make the lessons they are taught more interactive. Turning ant assignment into a game, incorporating music, video and other activities that students can join in with, rather than simply sit and watch, will keep them focused.

Teach the importance of ownership

tutor-adviceTeaching students that they own their work and actions will encourage them not only to do better work, but make every action they perform one they can be proud of.

The ownership spirit applies to all parts of life and by incorporating it early teachers can help instil the idea of owning every part of a process, not just the outcome.

Use goal setting

Have students set goals for projects and activities and help them create a strategy for achieving those goals. Ownership is centered on destination thinking model for their lessons will help them apply it to other areas of life later on.

How to be a successful leaner?

The study of student motivation and engagement has uncovered a great deal about the particular habits and traits of those learners who are more likely to succeed. Listed here are the 8 of these habits which appear to be the best predictors.

  • Effort: If you don’t put the work in, you’re not going to get much out. Those learner who literally put in the hours beyond the classroom, reap higher rewards.
  • Engagement: Staying focused and on-task. Not getting distracted by things tutor-advicethat are going on around you off by disruptive peers.
  • Skill development: Just like playing the guitar or becoming an expert batsman, you need to develop your skill as a learner. This might include note taking, essay writing or honing your listening skills.
  • Participation; being involved in what’s going on in class. Ask and answer questions and help others who might be struggling. Being fully involved in what’s going on is an important part of the learning process.
  • Attendance: Turning up for lessons – there is a casual relationship between attendance and exam success.
  • Self-concept: how you see yourself as a learner. A positive self-concept is positively correlated with achievement. However, self-concept needs to be realistic and goals achievable –over estimation can be an equally damaging as under estimation.
  • tutor-advicePersistence: Not giving up, even when it gets difficult! We quite often use the terms resilience and buoyancy for this ability to bounce back after failure.
  • Enjoyment of learning: Not seeing learning as something you a forced to do, but rather something that can be enjoyable and personally fulfilling .Although some will use the term ‘enjoyment of school’ I would argue that school isn’t necessarily a prerequisite for success .I’m reminded of a year 12 people who once commented that she couldn’t wait to start the A2 work, “I know it sounds sad “, she said, I just live learning.

Importance of Entrepreneurship Education

Importance of entrepreneurship education at grass root levels

What Globalization has done is brought to the forefront a new class of pioneering businessmen who know how to capitalize on the available freedom in market despite growing economic imperialism.

This class has institutionalized the system of business start ups. A closer look will interestingly reveal that this class has mixed roots.

While some have broken free from academics and developed what is known as ‘divergent thinking’ on their own accord, others have learnt the same via school and college curriculum.

The argument over the need for a business oriented education has been one that has given rise to varied and strong opinions on both sides. The subject has also inspired widespread research.

420entrepreneur-420x0The hype obviously is around those who made phenomenal success stories without a formal academia.

Arguments bases on such entrepreneurs cannot be negated either for they have names such as Bill Gates (Microsoft), Larry Page (Google), Michael Dell (Dell), David Geffen (Geffen Records), Steve Jobs (Apple), Richard Branson (Virgin), Ralph Lauren (Ralph Lauren), Jerry Yang (Yahoo) and Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook).

This line of entrepreneurs believe that innovation is a result of practical experience which will raise ones awareness of the business world and thus create a tendency to think ‘out of the box’.

Entrepreneurship, they say, is an innate talent. One either has it or doesn’t and method teaching will do nothing to improve this.

The years spent at a business school could be used to nurture one’s on-field expertise and strategy building based on the means at hand to create a self-sustaining platform capable of growth in ever changing situations.

entrepreneur (1)Not to mention the rising cost of education. An MBA degree would cost lakhs, money that would serve well as investment for a start up. Thus time and money are both at stake and by the look of it at loss.

From the businessman’s point of view education wouldn’t be a very profitable investment.

Of course these arguments make a poor show of the importance of academics but one lesson of globalization is that everything can be taught and learnt provided the resources and information.

CLP-brain-vector-shutter-stockExperiences can be shared and mistakes can be studied to avoid them. In a world economy as risky as today not only do entrepreneurs need to be risk-embracing, they have to be thoroughly equipped with market research, business planning and negotiation technique.

Attending a good course will allow the young entrepreneur in making to study the history of business and its makers. The student will then live through past experiences as case studies and learn by analyzing faults rather than by repeating mistakes.

Organizational behavior, decision making and problem solving is the core to any business study program. Thus a proper degree will give the student the benefit of knowledge.

Not to mention the years of relationship building that could result in collaborative efforts and partnerships. These methods however are basic and the real challenge lies in teaching entrepreneurial thinking.

entrepreneurThe capacity to innovate is the single most powerful weapon of the entrepreneur and the prime goal of every business oriented academic program.

Researcher Saras Sarasvathy in her work ‘What Makes Entrepreneurs Entrepreneurial?’ speaks of the concept of effectual rationality as opposed to casual rationality as the ingredient that makes entrepreneurs different.

The former enables an entrepreneur to build a compound model the uses its current status as fodder for future developments. This is possible only through an inquisitive mind that bends rules to suit his path.

The possibility of teaching one to develop a vibrant mind treading on uncharted territories might have been a taboo even five years back but today business schools are claiming fame based on their ability to create an environment for divergent thinking.

vision-skill-educationA BBA or an MBA today comprises of field operations, creation of working business models that students may grow into full time businesses in addition to case studies and theory.

The gap between a theoretical knowledge of business and on-site development through experience has thus been bridged as per current needs.

Of course Vocational studies and diplomas can give some of the knowledge that comes from a degree but a well oriented programme will give time to trigger a deviation from linear thinking and make room for a more proactive diverse brain function.

The field of entrepreneurship will thus achieve new heights by academics and practice, in essence a wholesome education.

Recent research has validated the fact that start-ups headed by someone with a college degree have a higher chance at sustainability for the list of people who made it with a college degree isn’t less famous- Bob Parsons (GoDaddy), Chad Hurley (YouTube), David Packard (Co-founder of Hewlett-Packard), Fred Smith (FedEx), Gordon Moore (Intel) are proof.

While Packard has an engineering degree from Stanford, Moore has a doctorate in Chemistry from the University of California. Smith is a Yale graduate.

Nothing needs to be said about their companies of course that are worth billions today and have touched lives everywhere and it goes without saying that their four year education did play a part it doing so.

Having said this, we must not forget to look at the larger picture that a gap now exists between school and college curriculum as far as entrepreneurship is concerned.

In schools even business theory is neglected, let alone practical. Economics is barely an optional subject and it is only after the tenth standard that the student gets to choose commerce as an option.

Moreover school teaching is designed for appraisal of discipline. Following conventions are rewarded and divergent thinking discouraged. Thus what today’s education still cannot give to entrepreneurial thinking is school level exposure to ideas.

Thus by the time a student graduates from school his divergent cognitive skill are significantly lowered. This issue still needs to be looked into.

In this article I have tried to highlight the pros and cons of entrepreneurship with an education and also briefly dealt with the problems at the ground level.

The bottom line however is that a proper education (academia and experience) will go a long way in shaping business and industry.

Indian institutes like the IIMs, Narsee-Monjee, etc have come long way in imparting good business knowledge and it will only be advantageous to the aspiring business minds to acquire a college degree.

Exam Modes: Online versus Offline

From the time when the education system begins and till date, exams are the only tool that validates a learner knowledge level.

The reason to look into exams is very important in today’s competitive world, the present world is packed in digital era.

Hence, the chances of interactions with internet has grown up severely in all domains and that led to the situation of judging Online exam and Offline exam modes.

For long time from now, most of exams have been conducted as offline exams, but the new system of online exams introduced after internet boon and it has been followed in most of competitive exams.

Undeniably India has long way of technical stability and that’s why nowadays competitive exams are mostly computer based.

Every year lakhs of candidates who do their school and college exams in offline mode are pushed towards online mode exams when it comes to competitive level.

Not all candidates are happy with online exams other than experienced persons.

Thereby a common dilemma exists about facing online exam or offline exam modes. To make your choices, we list contrariety between online and offline exams.

WHAT ARE OFFLINE EXAMS?

Offline exams are very familiar and habituated type of exam using pen and paper or OMR type and it has been followed still now in schools, colleges, coaching classes etc.

Earlier Online exams were only used in E-learnings, generally candidates do their preparation by looking questions from books and study materials and thus the candidates are very comfortable with offline exams.

omr_sheetFREE FROM TECHNICAL DISPUTES

In offline exams candidates are totally away from technical glitches. But only those students who have their own time management can afford with offline exams.

In growing admiration the technical problems are quite persistent. Most of candidates have doubts on,

  • What happens in case power shut down in computer based test (online exam)?

  • Even if problem is treated with immediate measures, unfortunately system may face no guarantee issues.

In such cases the examination centre will always ensure you that no such glitches come up.

DISADVANTAGES

Do you know what is worse than not attending a question and losing marks for it?

In Offline it is attempting a question and still not awarded marks for.

For OMR sheet you have to mark the answer very perfectly in form round form and the answers once marked cannot be changed again, which is one of the major defect in paper-pen test.

In OMR sheet, by fault if you marked answer for 16 instead of 15 then it runs you to trouble.

So be careful when marking options.

JEE_Main_2014-Information-Brochure-releasedMOVING TOWARDS ONLINE EXAM

If youfeel fair enough to take a computer based test then it’s very easy to go with online mode. Ironically those who know to use Pcs, smart phones, laptops are well known to handle computer applications.

Those students who familiar with Facebook, emails, Wikipedia’s are easy with computer based test.

Why panic about online exam? It is a simple process by selecting boxes or moving on to next questions like marking in OMR.

Online exam holds more facilities than offline exams where in a single click you can navigate between questions. And answering questions would be more accurate including no chance of mistakes in marking.

The questions can be marked for review and answers can be changed at any point of time.

At the time if you’re not confident or having no idea in selecting answer, just mark it for review and save you valuable time to continue with next questions

In India most of competitive exams and other PSU’s exams are already moved to computer based test, especially nation’s top exams like CAT, GATE, JEE Bank exams are conducted by online mode.

Although considering student difficulty in some exams candidates are given choices to choose either online mode or offline mode.

What’s the final recommendation?

The decision is depends upon personal choice and the candidates are advised to choose their comfortable mode of exam and verify with below recap.

Offline exam
Pros Cons
Before starting exam candidate can go through full question paper. Answers once marked cannot be changed easily.
No technical issues would rise up Due to students crowd exam fear may rise.
Candidates can manage their own timings to finish the exam. Offline exam mode is time consuming one.
Since offline mode has been already practiced in schools and college’s students will be more comfortable with it. Chances of missing questions may occur.
Online Exam
Pros Cons
Candidates can make their own timings and sessions Chances of facing technical issues and network problem are more.
Answers once marked can be changed later if needed. In many of competitive exams section wise pattern does not allow the candidates to navigate to another section.
Questions can be marked for review
Mock test gives actual online exam experiences.
Online calculator and workout spaces are provided.

In current pace, the development of things moves rapidly and dependency of digital platform is high, so it advisable to practice with online modes of exams in order to hope with future.

If an aspirant has dedication and practiced knowledge then exam mode is not an issue. At a distancebe prepared and confident to face any competitive exams boldly.

All the Best!

The Power of Online Education

Online education or distance education works as a great medium for students who cannot continue their regular colleges.

Such students can acquire their degrees and fulfill their accomplished goals with the help of E-education.

Online education provides an interactive classroom to the students. Through it, they can easily develop their communication skills.

Online-Education1The technology being used in online education is very effective. The online discussion board enables students to participate in the discussion forum.

All the students get equal chances to share their views in these discussions. Students, who are generally shy in face-to-face interactions, try to speak up in these discussions as they don’t want to be got ignored.

Students enjoy these discussions as they tend to learn more things by sharing their views with their peers and instructors.  Student’s knowledge retention is increased through online program.

The multimedia tools used in these programs helps students to enhance their memory. Students in reality are capable of learning through images instead of textbooks. These images remain in their mind for longer period of time.

Online education is not without its problems. It may not be for everyone. But despite of all these, it bolster students confidence and enable them not to give up their studies at any cost.

Please read this comparative article of online education and campus education HERE.

Campus Education versus Online Education

Why Online Education?

Education plays an important role in our life. It helps us to be independent. Be it campus education or online education, it has its own role in one’s life.

Campus education helps in personality development of an individual other than retaining academic knowledge. On the other hand, online education provides a more interactive classroom and allows students to develop their communication skills.

In campus, students can interact with peers and teachers, which is not the part of online education. They can even participate in extracurricular activities and sports.

download (1)Online education hinders this aspect and does not provide such an effective interaction between instructors and students. A discussion forum is provided in online course to gain in-depth understanding but even then, many   students are unable to express themselves.

In campus education face-to-face interaction happens. Due to this, equal attention is given to all which is not provided in online education. Distance education uses various educational technologies. For instructors it may not be as easy to identify when a student is struggling.

For science students campus education is best.  They need to perform practical and for that they need labs. Such courses cannot be accommodated in online education.

E-education provide  various multimedia tools, students who does not know how to operate such a advance education technologies feels difficult to handle it and cannot understand whatever is taught in online classes.

images (3)Face-to-face classes and textbooks are suitable for learning for such students.

Therefore, both students and instructors need to be technologically competent enough to use the educational technologies.

With enrollment in campus students become regular, disciplined and understand his responsibility towards his studies, he attends classes and complete assignments on time. E-education discourages all these aspects.

Students need to be more self-directed learners in online courses than in face-to-face courses. It depends on individual experience whether to go for online education or campus education.

For some who cannot afford to take admission in colleges on regular basis, for them online education is best option to continue their studies.

Whereas others who can afford their education and can take admissions in college, for hem campus education is good. It depends upon individual’s priority not on society’s priority as a whole.

Phonics: Relevance and Importance for Students

Learning is well-thought-out as an art in acquiring knowledge, wherein people would have different perspectives in learning things of world.

Known or unknown in some way or other we tempt to learn things; if interested then more curiosity to know methods of learning.

Generally, not many of us would be excellence in grasping information as quick as possible, especially for students it’s hard to follow.  Most of time tutors and parents senses tough to focus their students or children’s on study.

Because in usual method of study they grasp only information, instead knowledge is gained only when they understand the concepts of subjects.

Naturally students have better tendency to follow their mind with sound and pictures and that’s why everything we hear and see easily stored in our memory.

So then if you think, Is there any study method inform of sound-letter?Yes, of course Phonics method of learning makes students to clinch with words and sounds.

Typically many tutors would have probably heard of phonics, but the chances are quite less in knowing and explaining about phonics. That’s where we interested to bring you the basic information of phonics and its importance for students to lead a new study revolution.

phonics-app_thumb800What is phonics?

Phonics is a method of learning, which bilaterally coordinates words and sounds foreasiness and effective learning. The aim of phonics is to relate the sound and spelling in common words and there by linking to similar set of patterns.

While generating a word through phonics, the consideration must be on decoding for the reason that a vital element to link the previous sound with next word. In other words, learning phonics is attaining knowledge in a positive way in both reading and writing.

How to structure Phonics?

The phonics instruction has to be unambiguous rather than couched. The ordering of instruction relies on exposing unique clues on sound-spelling relation; surely one who understands this clearly, can be a good reader then.

Usually the poor readers finds difficult to follow at the beginning, so phonics has to be taught in easy manner. Especially children’s face quite difficulties in reading and so a good phonics should have a definite pattern for sound-spelling along with guided options to sound and to blend out new words.

The practice should start from a new word and followed by pronunciation with proper sound-spelling. This is a crucial part in phonics instruction to generate those words suitable for decoding, so consequently next word could be remembered easily.

PhonicsTherefore in phonics focus on sound-spelling relationship in minimal period. While planning phonics lessons,do plan accordingly to all type of students, even some may have higher level of proficiency than others.

How to practice phonics?

Phonics involves blending between sound and words, also written characters, but it mostly pinches on sound of spoken words. So while practicing phonics focus on sound-spelling relationships that related with print or text.

Most of phonemic attentiveness is oral tasks and so it is controversial in reading contents. In phonics several components are important for reading comprehension, phonemic awareness, vocabulary and fluency building.

The finest practices in phonics are listed that recommended for parents and educators for better teaching.

Modelling -Phonics

The modelling is a significant role in phonics that can be achieved only by self-practice. Most of the words would not be familiar to new readers, both students and teachers have to model sound-letter relationship to learn new words through decoding.

Some common text that could be easily modelled is non-fiction books, nursery rhymes, songs and poems with repetitive etymology. The exact period for learning phonics starts after three years from the child begins kindergarten.

Since the students are instructed from their kindergarten it continues in their studies and after quite experience deliberately they apply phonics in their readings.

There is no constraint in terms of age groups to learn phonics, but most influence constituents were the stage of development and instruction structures.

If a children receives instruction either one by one or as a whole that does not create any variations so phonics is something common.

Systematic teaching

In phonics the teaching should be preceded in systematic way and that actually means taking the children through a contiguous plan rather than general aspect of phonics. The systematic teaching can concentrates on the following,

  • Analogy phonics – New parts of words are discovered using familiar words
  • Synthetic phonics – Method of decoding the words by translating in form of sound and then blending it
  • Context phonics – Sound-letter links to generate context clues to decode new words.
  • Spelling phonics- The sound-letters combinations used to write words.
  • Analytic phonics – Parsing out of spelling-sound relationship from a word, once it is identified as whole word.

Neverthelessin systematic teaching, instructions imply a sequential focusesto help the readers to decode new words using the relationship between sounds and letter symbols.

For example:  If a child identifies a sound-letter in /a/ as a piece of literature and instantly this skill uses to get alliteration of the /a/ sound (beginning sound in repetition) and even phonics games are available, for sample if you write a word “cat” then the sounds should be produced in order of “c” ”a” and “t” so listening skill is much important in phonics.

Why student learn it?

The phonics tends to relay on particularly words and sounds which resembles common strategy in memorizing and pronunciations.

The readers have their own way of reading approaches by using pictures, context or excluding some parts. To become fluent in reading students are expected to follow repertoire of words.

Understanding of phonics draws attention in studies and research studies reveals that, students improve well in comprehend sections and helps them to map out sounds on top of spellings. Other than many benefits were griped in why phonics to students as below,

  • Phonics ensuing students with verbal exercises to erase reading difficulties.
  • Since it laid emphasis on spelling patterns in addition improves spelling abilities.
  • The blending of words and sounds indicates to identify word skill relations.

In addition phonics develops the eloquence in reading comprehension because students can easily correlate in word identification and because they identify decoding stands as a major trouble earlier.

If students do well in phonics and word recognition, then speaking and writing vocabularies is piece of cake. The reason behind this insistence is later it found that students who know phonics are beyond in using new words than those who don’t follow the same.

Also studies have proven that half of the English words can be put into phonics which related one with another.

For long time phonics was considered to be isolated learning and some researchers discovered that children’s perform well in decoding than young students.

Therefore phonics, is recommended for future study to improve vocabulary and language proficiency.

LinkedIn and Students: Making the Maximum Impact

I hope this helps you try and understand how LinkedIn works. I have had a great experience. The hard work paid off when I got two writing stints and an internship offer through LinkedIn itself.

Ping!

That was the noise my faithful Nokia N8 made when I received an email. You know that feeling when you get a new web message? I can never get over it, it’s pretty awesome!

Even if it’s a really stupid web advertisement sent as part of obligatory duties of something you naively signed up, it’s interesting to take a note of it nonetheless.

Anyhow, so I checked the new mail which was basically an invitation from an acquaintance. An invitation to what, you might ask?

Nay, it was not a more technically advanced method for Hogwarts to reach me and not an extended invitation to a magical guild, either! It was but a message to join a business network called “LinkedIn”.

I would have almost not taken cognizance of the same had it not been filled with interesting quotes and pictures from the classy professionals.

Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, heck, even my favourite chef had his own business profile. I was totally enamoured and mesmerized by the whole outlay and simply had to catch on with this trend!

Voila! That day saw me making a shabby profile on LinkedIn and, as is a very interesting habit of mine, conveniently forgetting that it even exists.

This went on for a few months before I was reminded of its existence by the faithful mails sent by the website. I decided to spend a couple of hours and dedicated that amount of time in updating and shaping my profile- almost into an online CV of sorts.

What changed, you ask? Why was I suddenly putting so much effort into this website? I don’t have noble reasons as I was simply catching up to the fad.

Recruiters, I was told by seniors, really search you up on Holy Grail Google and LinkedIn is a top result website and hence, I needed to put my best foot forward.

After doing some preliminary research on how exactly LinkedIn scopes out in the bigger picture, I was intrigued by the stories and by the way the website functioned.

Obviously, I had to perfect my profile. And I did exactly that, not saying that my profile is anywhere near perfect, but hey! Kudos to the effort, right?

This is not a walk through to make a great and outstanding LinkedIn profile as there is no set formula to make one, anyway. You have to personalise your descriptions and you have to learn with time.

The Picture

law students guide to using linkedinSo well, when you open the profile page, you see a square box in left-middle position on the screen.

This is where a picture of you needs to be placed. By a photograph, I do not mean a duck-face shot or an extravagant selfie.

I also don’t urge you to get suited up and hire the best photographer in town to get a classic shot. No, that is not my intention.

The aim here is to procure a picture which is simple, yet professional and nothing which makes the recruiter think, “Um, am I sure if I want to hire THAT?

Next, you will obviously put your full name in the required boxes followed by a sub-line. Now, that sub-line can be the name of your current college or it can be a recent place you worked at. Either works in this case.

Here is the time when you also mark your current location and define your education. Mention your college and your schools and make sure it reflects in the sub-heading as the final outcome beside your picture.

Next up, is the summary.

Think of it as a more mature version of an “About me” from Facebook. Here, I urge you to not EVER famous quotes. People want something original from you and it wouldn’t do you any good to pick others brains.

Here is a little hack: Modify the objective from your CV to the effect of making it wordier and a little more simplistic. Introduce your academic achievements, your extra-curricular achievements and your co-curricular achievements.

Talk about your internships, your positions of responsibility.

However, you need to get all of this done in maximum 10 lines in order to make sure that a person is STILL interested in scrolling down and reading the details for each of these things.

Now, the Experience tab.

iStock_000040905870Large-1940x1292This is pretty easy, actually. This space should enumerate ALL your internships with the specific dates and months marked out.

Please do not be lazy while providing details of the work done by you in all the individual stints: it counts in the long term.

This is also the space where you throw more light on your positions of responsibility and making it sound fancy: not an impossible task, you can take it from me.

Next up is the Test Scores bracket.

Yes, seriously, we need to put those marks out in the open. Okay, we can leave out the horrible ones [For instance, my Grade 12th marks can probably break the deal].

Create separate columns and tabs for all individual semesters with the particular GPAs reflecting in such columns. Here, you can put test scores for all the other, random things like your TOEFL, Diploma grades, certificate courses etc.

The next section is that of Publications.

This is probably the most important section, as is the case with your CV. Mention all the publications, even the ones you don’t list in your resume!

Mention the Article title, copy paste and shorten the abstract, list the journal and voila! It would all look extremely neat.

The Projects section is something I see people hardly utilise. It’s important!

LinkedIn-StrategyYou can mention your grad school projects, your internship projects and your school projects in this box. You could also put all the initiatives made by your respective clubs and affiliations at grad school, or post grad college.

Next up is the Organisations column

This should ideally depict you mentioning, in detail, all the positional responsibilities. Remember those from the Summary column? Yeah, those!

Be it Drama Club, Student Council, Book Club, Rotary Club, Debating Society or anything- Mention them with a few lines about the work you do there!

The Certifications column

is a “sort of there but not really there column”.

However, still make use of it by mentioning your diplomas, CS level clearances, language classes etc. There will be a series of overlaps but the key here is to not get bored. Haha! :D

Towards the end is the “Volunteer Causes”.

Here, you can mention the NGO you interned at, or the fest you volunteered for which might against overlap with the Positions of Responsibility column above.

The causes you care about column should be ideally brainstormed by you as I really can’t point out what you like. Make it a broad base in the beginning and narrow it down as you go further.

Next is the Honors and Awards column.

This is where you blabber and blabber some more about your mooting achievements, your debating triumphs and practically anything where you have attained a position even if it is the most funny sounding local competition to make the best advertisement. List it ALL down, here.

Ideally, it should cover the last 5 years worth of achievements. Were you one of those Olympiad champs? List it the hell down, mate.

The Course column

should see you listing down your university with a mention of all the major subjects you have studied till date. The same goes for your Grade 12 and 10 (if you decided to include them, which I would suggest, you should!)

The Skills tab

This column should have all the important skills and talents you have undertaken at grad school. Broad headings may include research, drafting, public speaking,  debating, specific areas of your specialisation, blogging etc.

You should try and get people to endorse you for more and more skills as it reflects well in the final profile: however, that doesn’t mean that any random Tom, Dick and Harry have any value with respect to such endorsements.

The Education tab should be a more extensive version of the Course column where you mention your standing in the batch along with the set of activities undertaken by you followed by the batch year.

The Additional Info is the informal section where you mention your other interests like, maybe, singing, dancing, trekking etc. You also list the method for people to contact you apart from LinkedIn itself.

The Recommendations column is also heavily underused but that’s because it’s extremely difficult to get someone to try and write good things about you.

Get testimonials from your employers, friendly associates and professors (if at all they are tech-savvy, that is!). These help a lot and maybe, one day you can follow through by doing the same for some other starry eyed kid in the industry?

Well, that’s it for now. I hope this helps you try and understand how LinkedIn works. I have had a great experience. The hard work paid off when I got two writing stints and an internship offer through LinkedIn itself.

It’s not all in vain and if you do the basic groundwork, updating it is not a Herculean task. You can synchronise it with the random updates made by you in your resume.

So go on, do this today. Take out a little time and utilise it by focusing that energy on LinkedIn. May the force be with you! :)

You can view my LinkedIn profile HERE to get a minimal idea. Full disclosure: this is not a marketing attempt! :D

Listening as an Effective Tool: Teaching and Learning

What is Learning?

Listening is described as an active procedure by which we make sense of, assess, and respond to what we hear. Listening involves five stages: receiving, understanding, evaluating, remembering, and finally responding.

Active listening is a particular communication technique that requires the listener to provide feedback on what he or she hears to the speaker. Active listening happens in three stages, they are: repeating, paraphrasing, and reflecting. A good listener is able to pick up on signals that may be very important to him.

gcen-teachingLearning and Listening

A knowledgeable and skilled teacher is a good active listener in his/her primary role. Good listening abilities are required to develop compassion and understanding with the students.

It helps to understand, whether the students are understanding what they are being taught. Listening also help in negotiating with students and neutralising any likely classroom clashes.

As we all know, listening is a two-way process. For a student, fully engaged listening might involve listening to a lecture, taking notes, considering what’s being said, followed by interrogations.

Similarly, for a teacher, the initial step is to open yourself to the answers of your students. You will find varied opinions and outlooks. By letting down your defences as far as possible, trying to sense the underlying meaning of what the students are trying to convey.

For both students and teachers, do your best to listen with full attention. While listening to each other, reserveyour judgement, assumption and disapproval. Because, to jump into conclusions before the one person completes not only shows disrespect, but hinders the flow of thought.

Students and ListeningDr-Alan-Zimmerman-Leadership-and-Listening

All people in a classroom generally interpret and then speak. Every word is backed by some attitude, values, past experiences, and so on.  Hence, allow the other person to finish their message before attempting to begin speaking, would be a preferred classroom practice.

There will be barriers in the process, language problems, distractions, anxiety, and prejudice;for teachers especially, careful listening along with spending quality time with students will make a good communication and learning process.

Above all, listen in a friendly way, act like a mirror, be attentive and alert.

Challenges of Self Teaching and Self Learning

Let us discuss some legitimate and common challenges of self teaching and self learning!

Lack of feedback is the main problem in self-teaching and self-learning. Specially it’s a lack of quick answer to small problem which leads to a buildup of a holes in knowledge.

transitionScenario: – If Arjun come upon a single sentence that doesn’t really make sense he doesn’t have someone whom he just quickly asked or email.

So either ( A ) he try to  figure it out before moving on, which could mean going off on a tangent, or ( B )he write this problem down to note the gap in his understanding , hoping to figure out later.

Self learner suffer from a  lack of organizations, lack of focus, and lack of curated, organized and current skill-level  appropriate learning resources.

If the absolute best thing for you to learn next was always at your fingertips, selected and ready to go, you’d accomplish significantly more towards your self-learning goals.

Problems that Arjun have to face according to the above scenario:

A ) If he tried to figure it out
  • The process of figuring it out could take minute or hours. Since he’s new to this material, he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know so his estimation could be poor.
  • Often the question are so minute , so specific to an exact example in a book or article that it seems silly to bug someone for help about it, even if this question might signal a great misunderstanding.
  • He spend time to trying to figure out what the Google search should be then more time shifting through the results looking for something reputable that answer his question .
  • After this ,he still might not find the answer, or not on that he understand or he might go down an infinity hole of learning more and more about a new topic , and not recognize when he’s understood enough so that he’s ready to backtrack to the original question.
B ) If he write it down and move on
  • It’s harder to get motivated to go back to the old question and look for the solution.
  • Then, he forget he don’t understand something until a later situation reveals his lack of understanding.

670px-Be-Self-Learning-Step-6One thing to note is that self –teaching happens on some level whenever you’re learning anything whether alone or with class or with a teacher. At some point you’ll be by yourself and have a question.

But having a mentor saves your time. Knowing that you have someone to at least brainstorm a solution with is psychologically, reassuring, and allow you to be perhaps more daring in your studies.

Most of all , good mentors provide those quick answers to small problems and prevent your knowledge gaps from growing

Is Open Learning still a refuge for Average Scorers: Defending the System

Introduction

Dipti Desai, a class XII student of Ruparel College, scored 75% in her Board Exams. Her parents wanted her to pursue medicine, as she liked nursing people very much. However, she wanted to pursue the nursing profession.

Since both could not agree on Dipti’s future, and because she did not have the required marks in her 12th standard board exams in order to pursue a professional course, she was very disillusioned. That was when her friend Neha, suggested taking admission to the School of Open Learning in Delhi.

Neha, on her part, secured 96% in her 12th standard exams and unlike Dipti, she wanted to pursue medicine. She could have easily got admission in a medical college of her choice, but she opted for the School of Open Learning because along with her education, she wanted to do a stint with her father, who was a doctor.

She wanted practical experience while she was pursuing her education. Dipti was surprised when she heard Neha speak out her plans. She laughed at her and ridiculed her. However, Neha knew what she was doing.

The School of Open Learning in Delhi has graduated from being an option for those who do not get admission in University colleges of their choice, to the most attractive option for the futuristic generation. It is slowly and gradually revolutionizing distance education in the country.

This was corroborated by Dr. Pokhriyal, Executive Director, SOL. He said the response to his school was improving year on year and it had grown from being regarded as a last resort for those who do not do well in their Class 12th exams, to the preferred option for generation next.

What is Open Learning?

Open Learning is also called as Distance Education. Distance Education or distance learning comprises education of students who are not physically present at the school.

There are blended courses, which are conducted partly through distance education and partly through classroom training. A recent development is the MOOCs or Massive Open Online Courses, which offer opportunities to access the courses through the World Wide Web or other contemporary network technologies.

A number of other terms have been coined to describe the different forms of education through the web namely distributed learning, online learning or e learning. Although, these are offered through the web, but they are modifications of distance learning.

The earliest attempts at providing distance education was made by Caleb Phillips, teacher of the new method of short hand, who sought students who were ready to learn from weekly mailed lessons. In contemporary times, Sir Isaac Pitman provided the first distance education course in the year 1940.

He taught his system of short hand by mailing lessons written on postcards. This scheme incorporated student feedback, which proved crucial to the system.

This system could be made possible because of the uniform postage rates across England in the year 1840. Later, it was the Phonographic Correspondence Society, which established the Sir Isaac Pitman colleges across the country to teach the course.

Today, we have open universities offering distance education. Open Universities are those universities, which are open to all types of students irrespective of formal qualifications. These offer distance education using specific media.

They offer a host of undergraduate and postgraduate courses apart from non-degree diplomas and certificates. They are the catalysts of furthering higher education in adults.

Open universities also offer certain services for disabled students and people studying at their home/workplace at their own speed. Here it will be pertinent to mention that not all distance-learning universities have the same policies. Therefore, it is best to verify the policies of an institute before taking admission in it.

Some Open Universities

The Open University system offers many advantages. An open learning university admits all kinds of people whether they are working professionals or students. They admit people irrespective of age and educational background.

They also prove useful for people who come from poor backgrounds. An open university enables a person to study the course of his choice, at his pace, in the setting he decides and thus improve his status in society.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University, formed in 1985, is a very good example of an open university. The Sikkim Manipal University also is another good example of an open university.

The IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) is the 5th largest university across the globe and it can be considered to be the pioneer of distance education in India. With as many as nine hundred and sixty centers across the country, it can cater to the needs of students across the whole country.

The Sikkim Manipal University or the SMU also imparts numerous courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels through distance education mode. Experienced and qualified professionals create the course content at both the above open universities.

There are other open universities too namely the Annamalai University, Nalanda Open University, Osmania University, etc. which offer courses in different subjects.

Conclusion

Thus, looking at examples like Dipti Desai and Neha Sharma, we can say that open universities are here to stay in India. This new channel of imparting knowledge to underprivileged children and working professionals has created a niche for itself in society so much so that a number of youngsters are opting for taking education through them.

They pursue a course through an open university and at the same time, they work in that field. Thus, they enjoy the best of both the theoretical and the practical world.

By the time, they complete their course, they gain valuable experience in the field of their choice and are then ready to launch out full-fledged into the field.

Truly speaking, open universities have revolutionized the way knowledge is imparted to students today. With the advancement in technology, we will soon have people studying on their laptops or tablets using the internet channel.

Already a number of major open universities conduct online classes for their students. Thus, OPEN UNIVERSITIES ARE NO LONGER  A REFUGE FOR AVERAGE SCORERS.

Importance of Questions and Doubts in Academics

Questions are slippery things, with an energy of their own! The ways we ask them shape the answers we get.

If you are thinking of getting a tutor, there are certain question you need to ask yourself and then the tutor you plan to appoint. Asking the right questions helps clear doubts can make all the difference in choosing a teacher.

Tutoring is a growing profession today. Currently, there are over 2 Lacs people practicing tutoring in Mumbai and sub-urbs. It is indeed a challenging task to find the right teacher from the many.

Before deciding which tutor is the best fit for your child, you should make it a point to interrogate and know certain things. Asking questions before the appointment of a tutor is extremely crucial to build a fair understanding between the tutor and the parents of the students.

With a little planning, you can easily slim down your choices and make sure your child gets what’s necessary. When dealing with a tutoring company, you expect and trust it to hire the right person for your child.

Be sure you agree with the company’s thinking and if otherwise, do not hesitate to gain clarity on thoughts.  As a parent you have the right to know how much say you have in selecting a tutor and how the company regulates what is appropriate for your child.

In the occasions when the tutor is not available, will your child be assigned with a substitute?

If you’ve chosen an online portal for your tutoring service for example My trusted tutor.com, ask in which language the classes will be delivered and also the hours of classes.

You should make it a point to ask how the tutor plans to build a rapport with your child and become familiar with the textbooks and assignments.

Next thing you should know is the tutor’s qualifications. Does he have experience teaching the subject your child needs help with?

If the tutor hold enough experience in teaching children of similar ages. If your child has special needs, the tutor should be properly trained to take lessons.

With asking the above question, request for evidences of the tutor’s success from the portal concerned in raising student achievement. You should know where the sessions will take place.

In the case of online tutoring, make sure your child has access to necessary equipment and the teacher should be comfortable with them.

How many students will be tutored at a time? If the teacher provides group tutoring, find out what is the maximum number of students per session. Ask the method the teacher will adopt to devise a study plan that’s right for the child.

Develop a routine to discuss the progress with the tutor. Policy for cancellations and makeup sessions should be discussed before the appointment. The above mentioned dialogues will help in achieving better result.

E Pathshala to put Textbooks at Fingertips

Gone are the days when one would have to wait to get the textbooks or make do with the old ones due to short supply.

And parents would wait for the half-yearly or annual exam results to know the progress of their wards. Now, everything is available on mobile application e-pathshala, launched by the ministry of human resource development on Monday with the concept of “learning on the go”.

An app for all stake holders students, teachers and parentsit not only provides all the textbooks of NCERT online which can be downloaded on the smart phone, one can also see recorded video lectures, and parents can check the learning outcomes of the students as well.

Even educators can log in to get access to periodicals and teachers too can access teaching instructions.

E-pathshala, which is available through a especially developed mobile app interface on Android, IOS and windows platforms, is broadly divided into four segments students, teachers, parents and educators. The resources are available in three languages English, Hindi and Urdu.

While agreeing that it is a good concept, principals feel that there are pros and cons for every technical intervention. Ameeta Mohan, principal, Amity International, Pushp Vihar said, “It will motivate students to log online and see the chapters.

It will also be easier for parents, as well as for students who sometimes forget to bring the books to school. And the studious ones will make most of this application. However, the feel of the book cannot be replaced.”

Tania Joshi, principal, The Indian School said, “Technology intervention is very good. But the question is how many parents and students are going to use this?

When all the NCERT textbooks were digitised, my students downloaded them but then they said that the book is not there. The learning outcome based on such applications will not be far reaching right now, but there will be a time when everything will be online.

But now, internet connectivity is not up to the mark and for this to be a success one has to improve the internet connectivity.”

For students, they get to access the e-books, audio/video tutorials and can keep track of the books they accessed, hours spent on a certain subject/ book and even bookmark the chapters studied.

Teachers can download teaching manuals and curricular resources which are listed class and subject wise. Parents too can access the e-resources and the additional feature in this section is the learning outcome.

The final stakeholder, the educators too can log into this application and get access to additional periodicals. Right now tertiary educational periodicals are available for educators.

When Everyone Opts for Professional Subjects!

Career Saturation

The existing cut throat competition is no surprise to modern day students. However, what is arising as a major issue today is the rising percentage in examination results.

Scoring 90%, which seemed like a far cry even a decade ago is today causing an unpleasant uproar in the world of education.

To have a detailed understanding of the situation let us sequentially discus the inception, objective, functioning and consequences of the 90%+ era with emphasis on the last segment.

India still has a very large population to be educated and even with free education and food for children; students drop out in large numbers as they go higher due to abject poverty, inability to cope with the subjects and thus failure.

The solution that was devised for this was a boost in examination marks to motivate the average Indian student to continue further leading to a better educated nation of youth.

Hence, in the past 5-6 yrs, the marks of students in board exams have shot up to where it has almost reached a point where there’s nowhere left to go.

Every other student is a 90% holder and despite the marks telling him that he is brilliant, (because that’s what a 90% means right?!) institutes of higher education have no place for him.

Though the steep inflation of marks is one reason, the most significant problem is the streamlining of subjects and careers based on popular choice resulting in all students above the average mark attempt a career in stereotypes like Medicine, Engineering, Commerce Economics and Law.

Now this phenomenon is causing trouble in many areas. To begin with, all the hype around a Science plays with the student psychology who, after the Xth standard cares more about his reputation than his future.

The confusion however does not halt here, after class XII professional courses become the natural course of action if you hope to retain any of that “reputation”.

Parents encourage this disillusionment as they believe a 90% deserves no less. The mindset is thus armoured by a high percentage but spatial restrictions prevent further growth. Though medical courses are usually entrance bases, others like engineering might not always be so the student somehow manages a seat in a private college.

Law and economics are a little less rigid and a 90% might just get you decent institutions. Furthermore, law has competitive exams which give you the scope of rectifying any mistakes you committed in your higher secondary exams.

The larger picture here is that most engineering graduates do not get employed as engineers for the number of graduates are far more than the jobs available. Medical students find it equally hard to get a postgraduate degree with which their graduation is useless.

The astonishing fact is that there is a huge crisis in the country’s research and development sector for all fairly good students opt for professional courses and the rest such as pure science and humanities is largely being pursued by those who have nowhere else to go and even here the 90% is leaving no scope for its lower less fortunate marks.

The shortage in research has reached such a point that the government is compelled to give scholarships to incentivize academic learning.

To summarize, the most visible consequence of high marks and stereotypical career choices are an ultimately dissatisfied student population that could have opted for a variety of research oriented subjects which could have benefited the state too.

Readying Your Child for the Competitive World

Some Basic Parenting Advice

There exist two terms basically, kids and smart kids. What differentiate them is the exotic or the exceptional qualities in them that make them stand out of the crowd in order to win over the others who perhaps are the mediocre.

The world is at an ever changing pace. There is the intruding of brand new techniques and systems which raises the requirements. There is no space or time for learning or analyzing things at a stage where everyone is competing with the world to gain the best of position.

If you want to stand with the world or dream even bigger to lead the world then inculcating basic personality and social skills is the first step to begin your journey with.

Of course every field needs a specialised knowledge of it. We are humans and not robots and therefore can excel and specialise in the knowledge of only one or two genres but there are certain characteristics and features that are demanded in every field that you choose. Not only in your professional life but for a healthy and active social life as well.

The very prime ingredient to prepare the curry of success is a thought about the future. You need to choose a field and develop positive thought about it. Because a positive mind can only lead to a positive scenario. But certainly only day dreaming cannot lead you to the dream destination.

The next thing that comes up is to take actions for it in the most apt way. This is an undeniable fact that actions need skills and no skill can be perfect without practice. The more you practice the more it gains perfection. Therefore directly it suggests that you need time for this.

Some of the basic skills are taught in school and learning institutions while some you learn with the experiences in life and the mistakes you cover.

We Seek Your Inputs to Make Tutoring a Great Experience

Online Tutoring Tips

Tutoring to some is passion, to some a profession. Each seeks or achieves a different experience based on the quality on delivery and reception.

A good tutor will need to have mastery of the material that he or she is teaching. It is important that they have a strong understanding of the subject.

When appointing a teacher, the parents look for great communication skills. A teacher is expected to hold the ability to identify the best way to deliver classes, and in a way that matches the learner’s needs. Parents look for tutors with prior experience in tutoring.

Teachers and parents recognize the importance of effective parent-teacher communication and hence both should discuss certain expectations each hold before taking up tutoring.

Students and parents are of view that a tutor provides expertise, experience, and encouragement. To have a good tutoring experience, see that you can relate to your student’s problems, the learning process becomes easy.

Students of different age will have a different perspective than their parents on the style of education. It is advisable to discover the student’s strengths and challenges in learning.

Many parents believe that their children learn best when they have more attention to their individual needs, hence parents look for private tutors who don’t take up too many students for one session. Thus, smaller classroom sizes, or even one-on-one learning, are preferred.

Teachers are expected to provide practice exercises to students on regular basis apart from theory classes as learning through practice is considered to be effective. The perception about online teaching and offline teaching is again different, as both have different benefits and needs.

Moreover, teaching and learning happens mutually, and hence, a balance needs to be struck. Parents also think that a teacher should help the student succeed at the first attempt.

Teachers are thought to be magicians. But, as a tutor, make sure the student knows it is safe to not succeed at first, there can be unsuccessful attempts.

To have a good experience in teaching, give positive feedbacks. Parents think teachers are the ones solely responsible to drive the success of the students, as a tutor you need to find success, and strengthen effort, in even minor deeds. Thus, it is good to have clarity in thoughts before taking up tuition to have a good tutoring experience.

Is Private Tuition Expensive in Mumbai?

Private Tutors Mumbai

This article is on the expenses associated with private tutors Mumbai, penned by Vandana Chawla. It is an insightful take on this topic.

Dearness has out grown itself every passing year. The recent trend of private tutoring has spiralled which has perturbed parents mind set to provide better education to their children.

This has not only compelled students to cope up with increasing challenges but also on parents who would have to work very hard to sustain themselves and afford ample private session expenses.

It is humbly advised to parents to not to throw themselves in a pool of anxiety and teach their children to believe in the true essence of education. A filial environment with parents’ attention and devotion can cause a lot more changes in children’s lives.

The outset of every academic year scrapes up a large hole in the pocket of the parents. School fees and other curricular activities are just a part of the expenses that boost up and especially for those parents whose kids study in 10th and 12th.

Private tuition is a plenteous bulk of expense. According to reliable survey of Forbes India, private tuition fee has spiralled greatly in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore and other random surveys high spot the fact of further increase in tuition fees.

In Mumbai, there’s a 100% increase in private tuition sessions per hour. Tutoring has gained an eminent position in Asian countries. It’s a usurious drainage of family budget and parents tend to afford it because every parent wants that their kids should outshine themselves.

The limited supply of quality teachers in this country makes it dearer and a great burden on those parents who cannot afford such expenses. Peer pressure, pressure by parents, high expectations, achieving best colleges to study makes it essential for parents to look after the academic needs of their children.

It’s a basic fact that a little chunk of parents always believe in self-study and govern the principle that better education kisses your feet through self-learning. It is highly advised to every parent to not to pin big hopes on private tuition sessions.

The condition of education is highly deteriorating in this country. It is commonly noticed how children in 1st grade are also sent to tuitions because parents do not have time to devote to their kids and unfortunately this circle never ends.

In this age of dearness, it may not be possible for many parents to balance family budgets along with high academic needs of the children. Recent surveys support the fact that private tutoring is going to be a huge expense in the coming years. Do not rely completely on tuition sessions.

Develop your own spirit and dedication to learning. Years ago, private tutoring had been luxurious and accessible to lesser people only but the trend has changed and everyone seems to be in style.

Seeing this rush of emotions in parents’ mind-set and necessities many organisations have also ventured up to provide them assistance in such cases. Private tuition has always been more expensive than group sessions and it obviously costs more in metropolitan cities than small towns.
