Everything You need to Know about Articleship Registration

Articleship Registration

This post has been penned by Gaurav Mergey and elucidates on the aspect of articleship registration or re registration for the purposes of CA. Read on.

“ARTICLESHIP” is irrefutably the most important phase in a CA student’s life. It is a 3 year training, wherein in a student has the opportunity to equip himself with all the tools which are required to have a successful future as a Chartered Accountant.

We get to learn a lot during IPCC, but articleship is a whole different ball game. During articleship, you get to learn how things actually work in the practical world. You will learn to apply the knowledge you acquire from the books. You will learn to handle stress. You will learn how to reciprocate to complex situations and get an exposure to overall social-economic environment in which organizations operate. How you go through it will definitely have an impact on the CA you are destined to become.

This article shall cover the following topics:

  1. Eligibility
  2. Registration Process
  3. Re-registration of Articles

Eligibility

Students enrolling for CA curriculum through CPT route shall be eligible for articleship on-

  1. Passing Group 1 or both groups of IPCC
  2. Completion of Information Technology Training (ITT)
  3. Completion of orientation course

Students enrolling for CA curriculum under Direct Entry scheme after Graduation / Post-Graduation shall be eligible for articleship on-

  1. Completion of Information Technology Training (ITT)
  2. Completion of orientation course

However, candidates who are enrolling into CA curriculum under Direct Entry scheme on the basis of their clearing CS inter or CWA inter shall be eligible for articleship on-

  1. Passing Group 1 or both groups of IPCC
  2. Completion of Information Technology Training (ITT)
  3. Completion of orientation course

Articleship Registration Process

The following documents are to be executed for registration:

  • Deed of Articles in Form 102
  • Statement of particulars for registration in Form 103 in triplicate, one copy to be sent to institute, one copy each to be retained by the chartered accountant and the article assistant.
  • Permission for other course (Form 112)

These forms can be either purchased from ICAI on payment of Rs. 50 or can be downloaded from ICAI website. However, if these forms are downloaded online, the candidate would be required to pay Rs. 50 extra.

Deed of Articles (Form 102)

  1. The deed of articles should be executed on a Non-judicial stamp paper or ‘Special Adhesive Stamps’ of requisite value should be affixed.
  2. The deed of articles should be executed for full period of three years. A deed showing lesser period will not be registered.
  3. The deed of articles should be executed in printed Form in duplicate and signed both by the article assistant and the chartered accountant.
  4. The original deed of articles should be retained by the chartered accountant and duplicate copy thereof should be given to the article assistant.
  5. The deed of articles is not required to be sent to the office of the Institute for registration.

Form of Particulars for Registration (Form 103)

  1. Statement of Particulars for registration (Form 103) should be filled clearly, completely and unambiguously.
  2. The form should be signed by the articled assistant and the chartered accountant concerned at the appropriate places.

Form 103 should be submitted to ICAI along with-

  1. Certified true copy of marks statement of Foundation Examination / Professional Education (Examination-I) / Professional Education (Examination-II) / Common Proficiency Test.
  2. Certified true copy of Secondary / High School Certificate in proof of Date of Birth.
  3. Certified true copy of marks statement of 10+2 examination.
  4. Requisite fees by way of Demand Draft as per schedule of fees
  5. Certificate of completion of the 250 Hours Compulsory Computer Training / 100 Hours Information Technology Training in case a student is joining 3 year articled training after passing Professional Education (Examination-II).Copies of all testimonials must be attested by the Principal.

Form 103 is to be submitted by the student at ICAI within 30 days of commencement of articleship. In case, the candidate was unable to submit the form within 30 days, it has to be submitted by paying a late fee (Schedule mentioned below). However, the form should be accompanied by a handwritten application for Condonation of Delay mentioning the reason for delay. This application is to be signed by both the student and the principal (CA).

Period of Delay Fees for Condonation
30 days beyond specified period Rs. 100
31-180 days beyond specified period Rs. 300
Beyond 181 days Rs. 1000

Usually no other document is required to be submitted along with this application. However, ICAI may ask for the following documents in case of any doubts-

1.Attendance Record of the Articled Assistant

2.Original Deed of Articles in Form 102, executed on a non-judicial stamp paper

3.Certified Copy of the work diary of the articled assistant

4.Stipend Details – In the form of bank statement.

Permission for Other Course (Form 112)

Prior permission of the council to pursue any course or study either through correspondence, private or regular (be it a graduation of post-graduation) should be obtained by submitting Form 112. The form is to be duly filled in and signed by the student, his employer and the principal of college at the time of joining the articles or during the period of articles if intending to join or joined subsequently.

Articleship Registration Fees

Amount of Rs.2000 is to be paid as Articleship Registration fee via Demand Draft/ Bankers Cheque in the name of “Secretary, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India” payable at Mumbai/Kolkata/Chennai/Kanpur/ New Delhi as the case may be. This amount can either be paid at the time of Registration for IPCC or at the time of Articleship Registration. In case, the amount has been paid during IPCC registration, no fees is required to be paid again.

Re-Registration of Articles

The transfer/termination of articleship in terms of Regulation 56(1) of Chartered Accountants Regulations, 1988 shall be permissible on the grounds stated below:-

  1. Transfer / termination of articles is permitted without any restriction during the first year of articles.
  2. During the rest of the articleship period, Transfer/ termination may be taken on satisfying any one or more of the conditions stated below:
  3. Medical grounds requiring discontinuance of articles for a minimum period of three months: on production of Medical Certificate issued by a Govt. Hospital
  4. Transfer of parents to another city
  5. Misconduct involving moral turpitude
  6. Other justifiable reasons/ circumstances-
  • Grounds permissible in Chartered Accountants Regulations, 1988:-
  • Industrial Training (Regulation 51)
  • Secondment of articles (Regulation 54)
  • Conversion from PCC to IPCC (for termination of articles only. Re-registration of articles to be allowed only after passing Group 1 of IPCC)
  • Death of principal [Regulation 57 (1)(c)]
  • Ceasing of practice by the Principal [ Regulation 51(1)(a)]
  • Removal of name of principal from the Register of Member due to any reason.
  • Marriage basis
  • Irregular payment or non-payment of stipend with ref to Regulation 67
  • Articled assistant desires to serve balance period of training outside India
  • Shifting by Principal to another city involving distance more than 50 kms

The articled assistants are required are required to get a consent of the institute before getting Form 109 signed by the Principal in their own interest. The request, based on any or more of the aforesaid grounds, of an articled assistant on a plain paper along with the recommendation/ consent of the principal for transfer/ termination of articleship accompanied by evidence/ proof to satisfaction of the Institute is to be made. Request for transfer not accompanied by consent of Principal shall not be accepted.

Important Points-

  • No registration fee is necessary for re-registration of articles
  • The particulars of Form 103 for registration under the new employer should be accompanied by a service certificate from the previous employer for training already served, in Form 109 or Form 120 as the case may be along with Report of Practical Training undergone in the format prescribed on the back of Form 109 or Form 120 as the case may be.
  • The period of training in the deed of articles with new employer must be the full balance period of training required to be undergone under the Chartered Accountant Regulations.

“Knowledge has to be improved, challenged, and increased constantly, or it vanishes.”

I have experienced that the above maxim has always worked for me.

Right from the formative years of my life I had an inherent liking and curiosity in discovering how things work. This trait found me dismantling and pulling apart anything I would lay my hands on, may it be gizmos or electronic gadgets, without bothering about the outcome. Consequently, I developed a natural liking in physics, during my schooling, and thus decided to pursue my career by opting for the same for my 11th and 12th.

The concepts started getting clearer as I related it to the actual world around me. I would like to share an incident which incredibly boosted my confidence and this took place during my practical paper in the final examinations of 12th. Among the scores of experiments that one could be asked for in the exam, was the much dreaded question on ‘Potentiometer’, which, as fate would have it, from among the 60 students who took the paper, fell upon me to answer. After the initial paranoia, the trait of inquisitiveness in me took over, and forgetting everything, I was immersed in the problem at hand, and much to the chagrin of my classmates, scored a 30/30 in the paper.

I joined Pillai institute of information technology (affiliated to University of Mumbai), with Electronics as major, and developed fondness for hardware, wondering about the breath-taking technology behind chips, PCBs and other amazing array of electronic devices and creations. In semester 5 of Engineering I made a project on  “How to create custom characters on 16×2 LCD using 8051 microcontroller ” which gave me in-depth knowledge of on-floor planning i.e. how to convert a circuit diagram into PCB layout and how to etch and solder devices” and also learned how to burn a code in printed circuit board. During this phase I learned that a chip is an integration of both software and hardware. My hunt in hardware continued further.  In the final year my interest grew in the subject “Data and communication networks.  Delving deep in to the subject I found that the communications worldwide hinged around networking technology in computers. I further researched on CISCO switches routers and firewall. I was assigned a project on “Analysis for system security authentication”, in which I blended the concept of authentication of image by the security principles used in certificates assigned to the routers for public and private keys. This further led me to present a technical paper on “Watermarking for analysis & authentication of image to provide system security” at the International Conference on Electronics Engineering and grid system-2013 held on April 21, 2013 at Mumbai.

I may add that I am a firm believer in grooming myself in to a well-rounded personality developing my social and interpersonal skills along with honing my technical prowess. In keeping with this, while I participated actively in “Workshop on Mobile making “and also ” understanding of Android Operating System” organized by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, I took part in cultural festivals organized by our college and won prizes in dancing. I have also taken to long distance running of late. I took part in Half-Marathon and successfully completed the same in July 2014. In January 2015 I was a successful finisher in the full Marathon organized by the Standard Chartered.

After completion of Engineering I joined a training institute, where I got on the job training on CISCO router, switches, firewall and IPS. I got to learn many routing protocols such as RIP, OSPF and EIGRP, in addition to Security technologies like VPN, Encrypting passwords, assigning security levels and also applying security policies to firewall (ASA and Checkpoint). I have also taken written exam on “CISCO Certified Internetwork Expert in Security” and certified myself globally by clearing “Checkpoint Certified System Administrator”

My yearning in the intricate technology involved in Networking has not abated, in that I am yet to have knowledge in deeper issues and expand my horizon in wireless technology .American universities are well established and renowned for their quality of teaching and research. I am fervent to pursue my masters in USA since it has one of the finest education systems, with excellent programs across all disciplines. Not to mention employers around the world respect degrees and certification from US institutions. Apart from academic point of view, I would love to experience the different cultures wherein I would have the opportunity of getting exposed at University.

Your esteemed University would provide me to pursue a Master’s degree in Computer Networks and further provide the right environment for further research in the field of Networking.

I wishI wish to excel in my field of interest with the intention of building my professional credentials with every course and future assignment I take. I am sure  that a dedicated study in Computer network will enable me to aggregate all my  knowledge and experience and also let  me in achieve  my goal. “To adapt is to move ahead”, aptly said by Byron Pulsifer; this holds true more than ever in today’s evolving business world. The ways of business have evolved and so have the businesses themselves. The last two decades have seen a changing scenario of the technological involvement in business. From core concepts to optimized concepts, technology has played a pivotal role in developing the business world. In my opinion, in today’s state of affairs, the efficacy of a business plan lies in its technology infrastructure.

I feel propitious to be placed in a position where I have a degree in Technology and four years of experience in managing business processes. At this juncture of my professional career, I sense an urging need to return back to academics to enhance my skills and establish myself as a better Techno-Management Professional. Therefore, I plan to apply for the Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) program of your well-known university.

I have learnt technology’s theoretical concepts during my undergraduate course – Bachelors of Engineering in Information Technology, and it was well complimented by the various practical aspects learned during mandatory lab works and projects. My final year project involved working on a process control device that included data acquisition, controlling and monitoring the real time process.

It helped me to gain a deep insight in Controlling & Monitoring Real Time Systems. I have learned a lot behind business process while working in Accounts Department for four years of a Mid-Size IT Organization. At this stage of my career, I understand the importance of Real Time Systems in complementing Business processes.

My tryst with the world of Accounting was a pleasant accident that happened at one of the technology workshop I had attended during my undergraduate days. I was motivated to work on building a vendor management system post the workshop. In order to recognize the business process behind it, I contacted the Accounts Manager from a software organization.

Later, I was offered Accounts Trainee role in the same organization. Perplexed by the offer, I discussed the opportunity and was communicated that they wanted someone from technology background as they were planning to undertake automation at their place next year and were looking for such people who would be keen to learn business process.

Under the leadership of Business Strategy Manager and Chief Accounts Officer, I started with Accounts Payable and Receivables. The existing system lacked streamlined process; serious need of automation was evident.

Once the automation project started, I steered the implementation of Vendor Management System that integrated various processes – vendor registration, vendor bill submission, vendor bill validation & booking and vendor payment and communication. Later, I also handled US Payroll for the organization where accuracy was the key and it demanded focus and determination.

During my four years of valued association with accounts department, I managed to gain first-hand experience of various business processes, chance to create process and be part of two major technology implementation. The yearning to explore larger possibility in the techno-management areas was a major driving force for me to recommence academics.

With increased need and emphasis of technology in managing Business processes, the Information Systems are the backbone of the infrastructure. A Masters in this field in addition to my undergraduate degree in Information Technology will allow me learn about advanced technology and business management using such technology. This will also provide me an opportunity to keep myself posted with the updated technology and strategies.

The concept of mobility in machines controlled by human beings seemed like magic to me ever since my childhood. This fascination has since been responsible for my inclination towards engineering. I have been an automobile fanatic right since my primary schooling days.

I was in my 8th grade when I decided to be an automobile engineer with my ambition to excel in engineering. I became involved in automobile engineering which brought me a step closer to my dream. However, during my first few years, I struggled in mathematics as a result of which I acquired a number of backlogs which resulted in 2 alternate year drops.

Being undeterred, I cleared mathematics as well as I utilised that time to obtain a Master Diploma in Product Design using CADD software to assist me virtually designed concept of a product I could visualise. This was followed by a 10 week industrial internship at TATA Motors Ltd. (Leading Indian automobile manufacturing company, 17th largest automobile manufacturer in the World by volume) which benefited me understand the various processes involved in a manufacturing industry.

I learned the importance of assertiveness, punctuality, precision and discipline while working on a project using the concepts of Six Sigma.

My confidence cultivated as the years passed by following which, I was blessed with the opportunity to live my dream, me and my team qualified for Formula Student Germany (FSG) 2014. Being the designer of the first FSAE car of the college with FSG, I was destined to implement and enhance my knowledge to develop the space frame chassis body, suspension uprights and differential mounts which involved immense research.

As we were preparing for the competition, we also qualified for the first FS-international event of our country, the Formula Student India. On visiting Germany, I recognized that what I have so far grasped is just a drop compared to the ocean of race-car engineering. This was the moment when I felt the necessity to study further and learn more. In order to help myself with the best education for my level, I made a selection of pursuing my Masters in Mechanical engineering.

Excellence, I believe, can be achieved by determination, dedication, and hard work over and above with the use of in-depth knowledge. On rigorously searching for appropriate courses, I came across the immense options provided at Iowa State University.

The M.S in Mechanical engineering with the research area of Design and Manufacturing Innovation was just the all-in-one package I could dream. On further research, I approached the Cyclone Racing FSAE team of your university, which also uses a space frame chassis. I aspire to be selected a part of it so that I can contribute my best to the team while I learn and implement my research.

As my objective is to work in a challenging automotive company, it would be a privilege being educated under senior lecturer Emmanuel Agba as I believe his areas of interest cover all my aspirations. It would be my privilege learning under a Six Sigma Black belt certified person. I am fully aware of the financial and intellectual requirements and I assure you that I have the necessary resources to fulfil these requirements. I look forward to be a part of your prestigious university.

My curiosity in the engineering stream took roots during my formative years as my family has been associated with this field for over two decades. My maternal grandfather retired as a Chief Engineer, my father is employed as Senior Foreman, Aramco and uncle, as an Executive Engineer. Their achievements in respective domains motivated me to pursue my career in a challenging field and persuaded me to study Mechanical engineering; the field of my choice at my under graduate level.

Sterling performance in my senior secondary exams (93.6% tenth grade and 80.2% twelfth grade) enabled me to pursue my studies at Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, a premier institute ranked amongst the top ten in India. I selected to study at the Dubai campus of the institute as I felt that the global exposure that I would gain from there would be of immense importance to me. I completed the course B.E (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering in 2013 and was awarded CGPA of 7.77/10. I now aspire to do Master’s Program in Industrial Engineering.

During my under graduate course, my firm grasp of basic sciences such as physics,  mathematics, chemistry and  mechanics etc. facilitated me immensely to appreciate fundamentals of variety of subjects covered in the curriculum. I gained knowledge in subjects like Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Production Techniques and Machine Design. I focused more on learning about Product Design, Manufacturing Engineering, and Design for Manufacturing, Fracture Mechanics, and Computer Aided Design. I learnt AUTO-CAD and PRO-E software. My under-graduate study has laid a strong base which will certainly help me understand and analyse the concepts involved in Industrial Engineering curriculum.

As my course progressed, I made the best use of the opportunities and training programs that I associated myself with. After completing my first year at college I got shortlisted for a consultancy project at IIT Bombay for conceptual design and CAD modelling of “Leaf Cutting Machine”. In sophomore year, I completed internships at Schlumberger, Saudi Arabia and at ABAN Offshore Drilling Ltd.Sharjah, UAE. In my third year I finished four weeks industrial project at ONGC Uran refinery, Mumbai.

In third year in college, I undertook design and modelling of “Non-Working Model of Stirling Engine” a project related to Production Techniques. Entire work was carried out in the college workshop by using in-house machines and tools. My final year project was Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) based wherein I demonstrated Micro mirrorusing CATIA software suite and analysed it for different parameters in COMSOL. A prototype was also made in the college workshop and a simulation was presented.

In my final semester, I undertook a six month practice project related to Engineering, Procurement and Construction of 4.75/4.2 MW Waste Heat Recovery Power Plant of Star Cement, U.A.E based on Kalina Cycle, second such project in the world in the cement industry. I successfully assisted in the estimation of consumables and manpower required for the project. I also associated myself with condition monitoring and vibration analysis of critical equipment of 7500 TPD Clinkerization unit. After graduation Star Cement conscripted me as Graduate Engineer Trainee (Technical) and during my tenure I executed four Kaizens related to cost cutting and systematic improvement in the power plant.

Apart from academic I was correspondingly interested and passionate about co-curricular activities. I directed a team of four and designed a Low Budget Remote Controlled Hovercraft using recyclable material and participated in TECHNOFEST 2011 (Working Model) event. I was A Runner Up in the Business Leadership Challenge 2012 held at BITS, Pilani. I participated in Business Process Simulation Workshop conducted by Prof. Dilbagh Singh Broca, XLRI Jamshedpur and an eminent author of 23 refereed papers.

The experience gained in Power Plant engineering project at Star Cement was exceptional in several ways. Working on Waste Heat Recovery Power Plant provided me with the opportunity to achieve hands on experience in domain of Optimization of Processes or Systems – how to minimize cost and maximize throughput. It acted as a catalyst for me to start thinking about the broader domain of Equipment Optimization, Operating Procedures and Control Optimization. Analysis of Plant layout and Material Handling System made me understand the essence of Supply Chain Management (SCM) and the necessity to plan and manage an efficient SCM system to support free movement and storage of raw materials, maintain optimum work-in-process inventory and dispatch of finished goods from point of origin to point of consumption. I was extremely thrilled by the experienced gained in the project and turn out to be more enthusiastic to further explore the dominion of Industrial Engineering.

The choice of Master’s Program is closely linked to my interest in the field along with emerging industrial scenario in India. The government of India through its policy and regulatory initiatives has embarked upon massive drive to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and make India a “Manufacturing hub” on global landscape. Pickup in FDI is already happening. Japan and China have recently announced investments to the tune of 35 billion USD and 20 billion USD respectively over a period of next five years. Fitch ratings in its September 2014 edition of Global Economic Outlook has stated that “India will be the only BRIC country where growth picks up in 2014 to 5.6% and accelerates further to 6.5% in 2015 and 2016, owing to an expected upgrading in the business environment”.

I contemplate the proverbial “If Winter comes, can spring be far behind?” holds worthy in the context. Intensification in investments is likely to spur industrial growth. Hence, I foresee an enormous scope in the field of Industrial engineering and challenge to grapple with for Indian industries, namely – to optimize scale, processes or systems, implement State of the art engineering tools and practices to achieve efficiency in usage of resources and global competitiveness on price front for the manufactured goods. The goal can be accomplished by implementation of operations research, optimization of complex processes or systems, equipment, energy, materials, logistics to name a few. I sensibly chose Master’s Program in Industrial Engineering as it will offer me the opportunity to equip myself to discover innovative solutions to challenging problems. On successful completion of the program I aspire to pursue my career as Consultant and desire to contribute meaningfully to industrial sector.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill said it all in just few a words about social responsibility.  I am overwhelmed by the message. Social responsibility is a duty every individual must embrace and I am determined to uphold it in earnest.

The Master’s Program offered by University of Southern California will make an opportunity available to me to learn state of the art technologies, access vast pool of technical resources and gain from the experience of faculty which will enable me to accomplish my career goal. Consequently I am optimistic that I may be given admittance in your graduate school. Engineering field is the legacy which has been forwarded to me by my Grandfather who acquired success to become an efficient engineer out of a number of hardships. My attentiveness in the field of Civil Engineering rose because of my father, sharing his day-to-day work experience and various developments required for the society, as an Executive engineer in MCGM (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.).

In the first year of my Diploma course I was familiarized to the basic mechanics, design, environment etc. which I started enjoying thoroughly; consequently, I decided to go in for Environmental Engineering as my major in engineering.

Although my undergraduate studies acquainted me with the basic concepts of Environment engineering, but yet, the fundamental knowledge of how such large quantity of waste and hazardous materials are effectively managed by organizations has always fascinated me.

I have also experienced the various glitches encountered by people concerning environmental impacts such as sewage disposal, solid waste management, recycling of plastic and other hazardous substances, Air-water-soil pollution, which is one of the major crises and requires an effective management of disposal, are some of the major factors that provoke me to proceed with environment as my major field.

While I was pursuing Diploma in Project planning and management, environment has always been my strength because I always enjoyed exploring about it. While I began studying this subject, I recognized that there is indeed a great necessity for me to expand my awareness in this subject and I could also perceive a comprehensive scope in this field.

We have witnessed a remarkable growth and development of Embedded System and its applications. Perhaps the next decade will shape the technologies to take the present Information Age to Embedded System and its convergences with other system which will be portable or wearable. The Embedded System offers a boundless outlet for creative activity in invention, design and analysis.

Since my childhood, I was always fascinated about all the high-tech toys the big shops displayed. Since I never had enough money to purchase them, hence I always tried to build them myself.

Lack of knowledge and resources never allowed me figure anything successfully at that time, but it made me crave for more knowledge that could allow me to build similar things.

My parents being precisely supportive towards my interests always provided me different sources; from magazines like ‘electronics for you’ to some basic electronics starter kit, from where I could advance the knowledge. Through this proactive support, I was introduced to the vast field of electronics right from my young age.

Though not really skilled through formal trainings, I could easily create simple working models like remote controlled race cars, walky-talkies on the electronic circuitry using rudimentary components and tools. However, it helped me develop my skills of handling tools and construct models within the modest resources available.

As a part of supportive activities, my parents had introduced me to various pioneers and precursors in scientific and socio-cultural fields. The immense joy of creating very simplistic working models, which were most of the time approximate replica of the existing one, were enough for me to understand what the inventors like Alexander Bell, Thomas Edison felt when they created new stuff. With time, the craving for this un-satiated feeling grew and I knew that this is what I would love to do for my entire life.

“Engineers like to solve problems. If there are no problems handily available, they will create their own problems.” It is that eminent inspiring maxim of Scott Adams which supports me to keep my focus on my aim even after some distractions which sometimes surround me and keeping this same apothegm in mind I entered college, I laterally with some of my likeminded friends formed a group called Society for uplifting of Robotics and Engineering (S.U.R.E.) for the students who were interested in the field of robotics.

There with the constant search for something to create or develop, we started to form various kinds of Robots, organizing events to educate the interested students and participating in competitions.  Being in-charge of Robotics and Programming, myself got totally into the field of Microcontrollers and Digital Electronics during all my all 4 years during Graduation in Engineering.

I was also convoluted in constructing different projects like Quad Rotor and Go-Kart. I used a blog to post information about these projects and tutorials as well. This helped us in getting feedback, particularly about the obvious mistakes novices normally make. During these times, we also stood third in ABU-Robocon India, which is a national level robotics competition.

The course I opted in my college had several subjects of my interest such as Embedded Systems and Real Time Operating Systems, Microcontroller Applications, Digital Electronics. I admit, though the scores I obtained in examinations are not too prodigious, I have thorough knowledge of all these subjects both theoretical and practical.

I have worked enough with electronics all these years, developing various projects, and now have the confidence and aptitude to design and develop any concept in a very little time so that if the resources are available, then Proof of Concept (PoC) can be demonstrated.

In all these years I have toiled a lot on platforms like AVR (Advanced Virtual RISC), PIC (Programmable Interface Controller) , ARM (Advanced RISC Machines) etc., but I crave knowledge, to understand all the technologies available. Therefore, by opting for the course of Embedded Systems, I am pretty indisputable that it will be a key to vast field of knowledge.

Today, Maker Culture is on its peak, lots of new products and concepts are getting introduced every day. Right now I am just a part of it. I have had a strong interest in Aerospace Engineering ever since I was a child. This happened when I was in 7th standard. I read the Book “Wings of Fire: An Autobiography of APJ Abdul Kalam” written by Dr.Kalam and ArunTiwari. This project has given me a great exposure to the world of Designing. It required extensive research in terms of designing a model and setting up conditions during analysis on CFD software.

Even I did my internship from college; Zeus Numerix Pvt Ltd in Pune for 2 months, where I worked on CFD software and carried out different validation cases to apply them properly on project “Aerodynamic analysis of Fighter Aircraft”. Eventually I developed a huge interest in Aerodynamics.

I joined the Fiat India Pvt Ltd after my graduation as a Graduate Engineer Trainee. Fiat is one of the leading companies in the automotive industry. I came across automobile and engine parts of the Punto car of the fiat. It was the most practical training, I had ever undergone.

In fact, this is something I have always desired to learn in aerospace industry but unfortunately I didn’t get an opportunity to learn this in India. This activates me to go for higher studies and pursue my MS in USA. I believe that by studying in a technologically advanced country like yours, I will be able to further enhance my knowledge.

As a widespread knowledge of computers is imperative for any engineer to be successful, I have taken computer and aerospace courses in C,

C++, Core Java, .Net and I am well acquainted with aerospace software’s namely Autocad, Catia, Ansys and CFD.

I would like to conclude with the reasons to apply in your esteemed university for my MS in Aerospace Engineering. After having gone through the details of the research facilities available at your university, I feel that they are necessary to my fields of interest and it is certainly the right place to embark upon my academic career.

Doctoral study is a significant milestone in the perpetual journey to education and the best exposure to this would be a worthy platform to prove the skills and knowledge that I have learnt. With due reverence to the department and the university, I pen down a ‘statement of purpose’. This statement is an endeavour to project my credentials as an aspiring researcher, my achievements as a biotechnology/biology graduate, my interest in this doctoral program and my ambitions.

I have always been a curious child, seeking reason and logic behind my observations of the world around me, and of the explanations put forth by others. I was drawn towards biology by my uncle who is a Doctor. He would regularly take me to observe surgeries in his hospital and explain various concepts to me. This subject has driven my curiosity, understanding it provides me a sense of fulfilment.

The dynamic nature of a living system fills me with wonder. It is astounding to see how open yet tightly controlled a biological system is, in order to maintain homeostasis. This is precisely why I would like to pursue a career in research, so that I can acquire new skills & knowledge and contribute to science.

My schooling and college education played a pivotal role in shaping my future. I had excellent facilities and faculty, which laid emphasis on fundamentals.

This fired my interest in academics and research and thus I have worked consistently towards this goal, with distinctions in my school exams and a Master’s Degree in Biotechnology from the Institute of Bioinformatics & Biotechnology, University of Pune, India. I am now looking forward to doing a Ph.D. and sense that the experiences in my life have been so far instrumental in getting me equipped to embark on this venture.

Firstly, the 5 Years’ Master’s program in Biotechnology has taught me to analyse various biological topics relevant to a problem systematically.

The comprehensive integrated 5-year program that I undertook taught me both theoretical and practical aspects of a variety of life science subjects such as molecular biology, cell biology, immunology microbiology, and genomics.

During this course I have pursued many projects, drawing upon the knowledge and skills that I acquired through classroom teaching as well as extensive practical training.

Among the projects that I undertook, the work I did on Drosophila to study the tissue-specific functions of a metabolic sensor in the regulation of metabolic homeostasis and organismal physiology has been the most fascinating.

This project was a part of my dissertation that I accomplished under the guidance of Dr.UllasKolthur, Dept. of Biological Sciences (DBS), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, India from January 2013 to May 2013. In this project, I established a functional diversification between the head and abdominal fat body in Drosophila melanogaster.

I also evaluated the role of dSir2 in the head fat body in the regulation of metabolic homeostasis in an insulin signalling dependent manner. I customarily used techniques such as cloning, transformation and PCR in this project. This project has facilitated me understand the critical link between metabolic homeostasis and aging and hence the relevance of nutrient sensing pathways to study the same.

Previous to this exertion, I was selected for the prestigious national level Summer Fellowship Program, conducted by The Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, India, in the summer of 2011. As a result I had the good opportunity to work under the guidance of Prof. Nand Kishore, Department of Chemistry, an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, India.

In this project I worked on the biophysical aspects of drug protein interactions. It abetted me understand the thermodynamics involved in the binding of drugs to BSA & Lysozyme and the physical chemistry underlying these interactions.

I used DSC, ITC, Fluorescence spectroscopy, CD spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy to determine the physico-chemical parameters and correlate them to the structural consequences of changing a system from the free to bound state. The ligands selected for this study were Naproxen, Folic acid and CMP (Cytidine monophosphate).

I furthermore worked on a project, of one year duration, wherein I explored the signal transduction mechanisms by which flavones isolated from corn silk induce cell death in cancer cell lines under the guidance of Dr. Ayesha Khan, DST Young Scientist, Research associate, IBB, and University of Pune.

The project was titled, “Mitochondria Mediated Apoptosis Induced by Flavonoids Isolated from Corn Hair”,formed a part of the compulsory project in the 3rd year coursework (July 2010-May 2011). It was during this project that I developed a liking towards cancer biology.

I had the wonderful opportunity to present this work at Annual Conference in Biotechnology, IBB, University of Pune, and 19th April 2011, organized by IBB, University of Puneand at the Project competition organized by Pune Inter College Consortium (PICC) in March 2011.

Two other enlightening projects that I undertook while at IBB were “Hepatoprotective activity of two plants belonging to the Amaranthus and the Portulacaceae family and the evaluation of effect of food processing on anticancer activity of some common vegetables.

I also attended various conferences during my coursework at IBB. The Mini-Symposium on Cancer Informatics Analysis and Informatics of Microarray Data, Organized by NCCS (National Centre for Cell Science) and Department of Bioinformatics, University of Pune, on 14th September, 2012 aided me understand the strength of bioinformatics as a tool to study Cancer and other biologically relevant issues.

It helped me interact with various eminent scientists and doctors who were working in the field of genomics and transcriptomics. The discussion on their research works was very inspiring. The National Conference on Recent Trends in Biotechnology and Industry-Academia Interaction organized by IBB and Department of Microbiology, University of Pune, India on 8th -9th March 2010 was an enriching experience.

I was propitious to attend the 1st Science Conclave with Nobel Prize Winners organized by IIIT, Allahabad, India in December 2008. It was a boundless opportunity to meet the Nobel Laureates. I could perceive their passion for science and their work during the presentations and personal interaction sessions.

After completing my Master’s degree in May 2013, I decided to join the Biotechnology Industry to acquire a perspective on how biological research gets translated into drugs and therapeutics that are qualified for administration to patients. I was blessed enough to work as research intern in the bioassay group, R&D at Lupin Biotech Limited, Wakad, Pune, India from November 2013-April 2014.

Here I worked on cell proliferation and signal transduction assays to evaluate the potencies of certain bio similar drugs. Presently I am working as a Research Officer in the Dept. of Cell Biology, R&D, Quant immune Solutions Pvt Ltd, Navi Mumbai, India since June 2014. My work here involves Cell line maintenance and characterization; and the development of ELISA based techniques to perform PK-PD studies of certain drugs in clinical samples.

I also had the noble opportunity to study the affinity and kinetics of protein-protein interactions using surface Plasmon resonance. This has helped me understand the physiology of drug distribution and the various factors which play a critical role in aiding/inhibiting its action.

Apart from technical skills, I have always been an active student.  The various extra-curricular activities offered by my college sharpened other essential skills in me. I was part of the organizing committee for my college cultural fest and for the Science Day Program held in the Pune University.

I have been a member of the Editorial Board of school magazines and I found this different experience really fascinating. I have also had the privilege of teaching underprivileged children as a member of the student teaching committee of the “JAGRUTI” program. Along with all this, I have learnt to speak four languages and can write in three of them. My other interests include travelling, painting, music, cooking and reading.

All throughout my undergraduate and graduate career, I have equipped myself with participation in various technical symposiums attended seminars and have done projects across a spectrum of fields.

I believe that an interdisciplinary learning that I have strived to acquire, has taught me to look for answers and overcome challenges. Having knowledge in various fields certainly makes that job easier, as we know which field can cater to what part of the solution. This approach has really helped me in working in collaborative research initiatives and I wish to be a part of similar initiatives in future.

Therefore, I am now ready to pursue a PhD to advance my career into basic and translational research. I am a keen and hard-working individual with a passion for cancer biology. I am certain that I will be able to cope with the rigors of an International curriculum with ease. My determination to succeed and do well will enable me to be among the better students of your college.

I highly value time and resources and as highlighted in my application, I have worked hard in the last six years to thoroughly train myself to pursue a career in research. It is this philosophy that commended me to think exceedingly about education right from my young age.  And what other way there is to help change the world other than taking up Science.  In the past century, there have been unrelenting technological advances in the field of Science particularly in Biotechnology, which have created newer opportunities for growth.

I was introduced to the world of Biotechnology in my 12th standard.  ‘Cloning’ and ‘Gene therapy’ kindled my puerile passion and turned out my interests and curiosities into realities.  It was these initial curiosities that led me to pursue Biotechnology as my majors during my under graduation.  The basic unit of life-cell- and the various processes associated with it like replication, transcription and translation all intrigued me to follow my quest to learn more and more about this mysterious world of Biotechnology.

Biotechnology is the most upcoming field.   It has a ubiquitous presence across the world. Biotechnology is the field of future that is beneficial to the individual as well as the society.  I want to be an element of innovation in this field, which is creating a better tomorrow for everyone.  To do this, I need to arm myself with requisite knowledge which a graduate program can furnish.  I envision your university as the right stepping stone to pursue my dreams and achieve my career goals.

During my under graduation in D.Y.Patil University, I had been exposed to various fields like ‘Molecular Biology’, ‘Animal Tissue Culture’, ‘Bioinformatics’.  These areas provided me with a firm foundation and took me a step closer towards the fulfilment of my goal.  Through various seminars, symposiums and internships from renowned institutes and hospitals, I learnt various concepts of research and development.  This helped me become verse with the various technological advances in the field of science and expose growth opportunities in different dimensions.  These internships have made me verse with the practical experience of the real research that takes place.

I have good academics at every step in my education. I have secured 79% in B.tech Aerospace Engineering from University of Petroleum and Energy Studies.

During my graduation I got wide exposure to numerous courses that I found interesting- namely, Mechanics of solid, Thermodynamics, Finite Element Analysis, Engineering Graphics, CAD/CAM, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

During my graduation I carried out my final year project on “Study and validation of Aerodynamic forces on cruise missile using Catia and CFD software”. This project has given me a great exposure to the world of Designing.

It required extensive research in terms of designing a model and setting up conditions during analysis on CFD. Even I did my internship from college in Zeus Numerix Pvt Ltd, Pune for 2 months.

In which I worked on CFD software and carried out different validation cases to apply them properly on project “Aerodynamic analysis of Fighter Aircraft”.

I joined the Fiat India Pvt Ltd after my graduation as a Graduate Engineer Trainee. Fiat is one of the leading companies in an automotive industry. I came across the automobile and engine parts of the punto car of Fiat. It was the most practical training, I had ever undergone.

In fact, this is something I have always desired to learn. This inspires me to go for higher studies, and pursue my MS in USA. I believe that by studying in a technologically advanced country like yours, I will be able to further enhance my knowledge.

A systematic knowledge of computers is imperative for any engineer to be successful and therefore I have taken computer and mechanical courses in C, C++, Core Java, .Net and I am well acquainted with mechanical software’s namely Autocad, Catia, Ansys and CFD.

I would like to conclude with the reasons for my preference to apply in your esteemed university to pursue my MS in Mechanical Engineering.

After having gone through the details of the research facilities available at your university, I feel that they are very much desired to my fields of interest and it is the right place to embark upon my academic career. My fascination for Medical science has not developed in a day or two rather I am considerate to become——-And the seed to become ———was seeded during my formative years. I vaguely remember how inadequate health education caused my grandmother succumbed to chronic renal failure. After seeing many more patients in similar plight, I realized how grievous the matter is. During my school days I came across the concept of prevention of disease which further sparked me to do something for the betterment of the ailing society. I have a great admiration for this profession and see the medical personnel as angels who resurrect the one who has lost all hopes to survive and that’s why I am obstinate to choose this respectable field as my career preference.

I sensed my dream transforming into reality when I was successful in getting admission in a medical school (Dr.D Y Patil Medical College, Nerul, Navi Mumbai).Though it was just a beginning to a journey which was long headed; giving a lucid idea of doing something for public health awareness. During this I came across the magnitude of medical knowledge which could not satisfy my carving to serve humanity. Meanwhile, in the third year I came across ‘Community Medicine’ a subject so unique and befitting for practical approach. It set my inclination towards public health management; the way, how planning and policy making can help to prevent a simple infectious disease. If we could spread awareness on this, each one of us could be on the healthier and safer edge.

Further polishing in this field was attained during my internship days when I learnt about the clinical trials and case studies. It showed how the genesis of disorder, risk factors and management were interlinked. The example was set by my experience during case study of psychiatry patients and family education and support along with the use of newer and safer technologies, drugs and research. My participation in mega health check-up left imprints of how much more we need to accomplish in general public awareness and management. For me, medicines showed a failure because of high cost of minor and essential surgeries, maternal malnutrition resulting in low birth weight neonate; a case like tuberculosis disease needed a far wider and scrutinized approach in preference to just serving the elitist orientation of medicine.

I am familiar that subjective statistics is by explanation questionable, I however have an adequate amount of personal and ancestral involvement through ailment which causes me to be strong supporter of the power of alternate treatments to melodramatically recover publics’ health. Old foreign drug undoubtedly has its place; nevertheless a person’s role in keenly handling his own wellbeing is undeniable. By advancing my expertise in the programme of public health management, I shall be able to learn more about the noble virtue of health administration and management. This programme will set a milestone to my journey and benefit me explore new health opportunities for tackling key constraints to development and research.

There is a great impetus of health development in your country and I have always been yearning to study at your academy with world class amenity and education. With a good performance at the Engineering Entrance Exam I gained admission in the prestigious Bachelor’s Program in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering at YeshwantraoChavan College of Engineering with the best department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering at Nagpur University. I succeeded to grab an opportunity to work in a renowned software company ‘L&T Infotech’ in Software Development, Maintenance and Support of Mainframe based applications for more than 2.5 years.  While working in a software company, I have seen how information systems can serve as a bridge between technology and business by supporting its planning, operations and critical decision making. With this experience, I am convinced that I want to pursue Masters in Management Information System (MIS).

My final year project on “Cognitive Radio Antenna”, involved the designing of an antenna which tracks the temporarily unused frequency bands in a radio and allocates tasks to them, to prevent the wastage of frequency bands in a radio. Working on this project enhanced my designing and presentation skills. Also, working with a team, I developed interpersonal skills and fostered leadership qualities.

Along with a good academic performance, I have always been an active member in extracurricular activities.
